All very good advice thx folks & the F12 has certainly now gone on the list. Went to drive the McLaren 570s with a view to ordering a spider following FOS & absolutely no doubt that it's a very good car. Better put together than reviews had led me to believe, very fast, sharp steering & braking, a pointy & alert, yet smallish feeling car - felt like a Boxster S or Cayman S on steroids ...& that's no insult as they are 2 of my favourite cars for ride, performance & handling. But at £160kish for the base car plus another £35k for extras, the 570s spider just didn't stack up in terms of value, given the likely depreciation within the first 6 months. What I thought did represent the best value is a MY15, low mileage, perfect condition, Taracco Orange 650s spider in the mid £160s....so let's see how we go...watch this space & thx for all the constructive advice!!

650S spider is undoubtedly the best value for money supercar out there at the moment.
Unbelievable performance at an unbelievable bargain price.
Used ones have done all their depreciating now so should be a sound investment as well.
Expect to get asked if it's a P1 lol

F12 is a very good shout, by far the prettiest Ferrari IMO.

This one is a good one, the exhaust sounds insane ( I might be biased though )

Have already had this and have only owned my 650S for two weeks.

Have had lots of attention in the McLaren, but surprisingly all positive. I was expecting the odd negative comment or hand signal but so far people seem to react really well to them.

Along with a Lamborghini Gallardo Performante it's the most attention and positive comments I've had in a supercar.
Most are curious about the brand and due to its rarity and exclusivity they think the cars are worth 10 x what they are.
It's great not to be another sheep

You will see from my history I have had a lot of varying marques, but the McLaren and the Mk1 R8 always received the most positive comments. People seem to adore the Mac.

Can echo the comments for the F12. Took delivery of one of the last in May and it has surpassed all expectations. Obviously these choices are very personal but for me and my heart strings it was a more special car than any other rivals up for similar money and at the eleventh hour (after discounting 991RS and 675LT) I chose it over a Speciale as well.

The breadth of the car's ability is probably what has been the biggest surprise though, it's almost any car that you want it to be from tight Austrian mountain roads, 700 mile Autobahn stints, popping to the shops or turning everything off an unleashing a complete bd animal of a car. Don't imagine that it's too GT, too heavy or lacking in agility compared to its mid engined peers; it's a precision sports car through and through IMO and will delight and thrill no matter what you ask of it. Cabin is also really nice and spacious for tall folk.
congrats! I like your progression of car ownership

So. I have a 650 spider in ideal spec. Volcano Red and lashinefs of mso carbon bits. It feels a lot more special than my ferrari did and my friends that own 458s admit that mine makes their cars look fairly standard fare. I get asked all the time if it's a P1. It's not as loud as a 458 at low revs but boy does it beat it on every other score - interior, usability, drama, presence, uniqueness etc. I'm struggling about what to get next to be honest. I might wait until 720s come
Onto the second hand market. I quite like the F12 but it hasn't got supercar doors ;-)

Seems a fare few 458 owners have upgraded to 650S and only have good things to say.

I mirror the comments that apart from maybe sound it's superior in every way yet cheaper ?

I think the McLaren is a good fast car but its no match imo for a Ferrari just has not got the same soul.
Also if you have watched STG s video on a supercar drive out where he thought his McLaren was superb and asked all the other supercar drives what they would change for he and me was surprised ,hardly any of them said a McLaren they all would upgrade to another Ferrari.
McLaren are doing well but they are not at Ferrari level by far. All imo of course and not wishing to offend Rambo!

I agree cayman. The brand recognition and presence simply isn't on par with ferrari. This can be a good thing - many people see my car and think I'm in a hypercar :-) also. I think getting people out of a ferrari into anything else is a challenge - ferrari do a terrific job of managing their brand appeal. Still, I'm happy with my choice. I'll get another ferrari but I think I'll miss the relative exclusivity of a mclaren if I do that.

It's an interesting debate & one in which all views so far in this thread are probably accurate. I've had a Ferrari for 17 years & this will be my first McLaren. I'll almost certainly get another Ferrari at some point, but I'm looking forward to time in the 650s. The engineering & fit quality is impressive; the ride and handling superb, it's very usable, but it's different.

I think the McLaren brand has now come of age and it's British and I've still got TVRs, so time to fly the flag once again! And the image comes with less baggage than Ferrari ownership....yes my Ferraris have been admired by many, but there equally many who have been, let's say 'less respectful'!! Anyway, watch this space!!

How about putting your name down for the 570s spider out in 2018?

Other ideas AMG SLS roadster, i8 roadster and have you driven a California T?
If you are considering moving up, I think this is a great car/investment http://ddclassics.com/car-listing/ferrari-575m-sup...

Good Luck and nice choices to have.
