I bought privately on the assumption if the shocks went I'd sort them myself for £2k tops and if the a.c. went it's a bugger but I could live without it till repaired or car sold with known fault. 3k or so bill on the v8.
£5k is a nice fund to have in mind, I saved at least that buying private. Manual box for me so less issues and the clutch is good for 40-60k if not abused at least.

barriejames,

Any update on the car - new pictures?

As you have bought privately by the looks of it can I ask what you are doing ref warranty or are you just putting aside monies for any big bills.

I am looking again at these and so many are outside the network its difficult to consider them without warranty so genuinely interested in your thoughts.
(the indy warrantys amount to nothing imo)

Thanks.
I was also in a dilemma regarding warranties prior to purchasing my R8 last year, so thought I would share my experiences.

Having dismissed after market warranties due to their preponderance of 'grey areas', I decided that i would put the monies aside that the Audi warranty would have cost me had I elected to go for it (£1500). Over the first twelve months of owership the car has incurred around £3k of repairs, of which possibly £2k's worth would have been covered by an Audi warranty. I say possibly as this was for replacement magnetic dampers that I'm not certain would have been covered. Now, into my second year of ownership and I'm hoping that the repair costs will be significantly reduced due to the bulk of the outlay being for the dampers. I should point out that I elected to replace my mag ones for passive dampers from the Plus, which are not only about fifty percent less to purchase but also don't have the premature failure record of the mags. Other repairs included, pas pipe, oil return pipe, expansion tank and battery, all of which failed due to wear and tear and would consequently not have been covered by the warranty.

When all is said and done, only you can decide what's best for your situation.

I bought private with no warranty and just an Audi health check the guy showed me his invoice from purchase and paid for the health check and a new sensor etc I will take my chance as the health check seemed thorough and to be honest I wanted a v10 spyder manual in Red gen 1 which left me with 2 cars one a good deal cheaper than the other and so far the early signs are all is good. My car was way over 10k less than the other one advertised from a dealer

I get the impression the v10 is slightly less worrisome in that the a.c. failing isn't engine out. Dampers are Dampers, it's not the end of the world if they go.
If agree with Trevors thoughts about non mag ride if they do. No fixing it twice then!
Great cars overall, I've spent less than a grand on servicing and new air filters in its first year. Theoretically if nothing breaks I don't need any servicing next season. (3k miles annually)

Looks superb. Red was my first choice but couldn't find the right car when I was searching.

Thanks. to be honest this was not the right time for me as I had to get the money together but knew when one came along I had to buy it as it will take ages to find another v10 Manual Spyder in red at sensible money!!

That’s correct on the AC and the v10. Dampers can be refurbished at £1,000 a pair from a company in Poland as another opinion.

I personally would always have an annual service, no matter the mileage. I did 3,500 miles last year and still had an annual service. Mine was a full service, no air filters but an oil and spark plug change, couple of bits and pieces plus an engine carbon clean and it was just over a grand.

Can you feel difference in carbon clean response after?
Mines only done 15k but not to say it won't be gummed up

Yeah my son asked that!! I guess I don't really feel the urge when the roads are salty and wet, I have a Fire blade tucked up also not getting used!!! At most I guess I am a 2500 miles a year in my best car and 20k miles in the company Mondeo.

Many thanks

Whilst writing be interested to hear the group thoughts on the access to the brake fluid reservoir? Has anyone cut an access "hole" as discussed on some forums? Taking off the under bonnet plastic trim sections and wipers as Audi recommend seems a hard way to do it

Wow, that's some restraint. I promised myself when I bought mine that it would be an all year round, any journey car (except dog walking!!). Life is too short!

I guess I am a bit odd that way I get as much from the visual and sound of a car as I do driving it. Its not that I am saving the car but have two other much cheaper diesels to jump in most days. The Mrs much prefers my out going E class as its a bit smoother and less drama on the road and the heated seats get hotter!!! As for me its really all about the top down sunny day's which is also partly why I only use April to October
