I had a McLaren 12C, wonderful car, only used around 40% of its performance 95% of the time due to road conditions. Have an Exige 350 Sport and use 75% of its performance most of the time. Also have a Mk1 MX5 and use 95% of its performance 95% of the time. I also have a Ferrari and to be 100% honest I get most driving fun out of the MX5 and Exige as there is much more opportunity to enjoy and exploit the cars than there is in a supercar. Supercars are exciting, when you get to use the full performance, but those opportunities are very, very rare. The other 95% of the time can be frustrating....waiting.... I live in the South East and realise some people have access to better roads but speed cameras, HUGE modern vehicle size, poor road condition, cyclists, poor driving (by others) and changing attitudes of other drivers to spirited road driving (even overtaking someone doing 40 in a 60 results in the flashing lights of disapproval) all contribute to much less opportunity to use the full performance.
A lesser powered sports car with good suspension and brakes that can be revved out and enjoyed around legal speeds is much more fun for most people most of the time. As wonderful as supercars are they are probably dinosaurs. However I will keep buying them while they make them for that magic 5% of the time when you can enjoy them to their full potential. The other 95% of the time I will be in my Mk1 MX5.....
I can’t afford a proper supercar but am about to get a v8 R8 as it has a lot of the supercar ingredients for an affordable buying and running cost, plus it isn’t so fast that you can’t enjoy its performance too A lesser powered sports car with good suspension and brakes that can be revved out and enjoyed around legal speeds is much more fun for most people most of the time. Before you do so, do try the v10 if you haven't. imo it's much the better car over the v8. Usually power isn't everything but the r8 is quite a heavy car, the extra power in this case really helps.isaldiri said:
