interesting, you don't hear of many!

I let a die hard porsche fan drive one who despised ferraris (hadn't driven one since the 355 though) and he ended up selling his 911 and buying a 458 within a few weeks!

A 360 and a Mac is a brilliant pair of cars, and IMO a much better balance than an Vantage and a Mac.

I'm looking around speculatively to replace my 540C but the cost to change 'up' is unreal. Probably £80k+ to go to a 720S. Whereas £80k buys a lot of second car.

The situation with the McLaren isn't actually finished. There is a discussion going on with the dealer about an alternative deal. I doubt it will happen - I don't expect him to be able to come up with the numbers I need - but we'll see.
Intriguing, tell us more !!

I had a stable of a Aston Martin DBS Carbon Black, a Porsche 996 GT3RS and a 458. Guess which one ticked all my boxes and still makes me giggle.

Yes the 458. It's a great car, makes all the right noises and makes you feel like an F1 driver.

I even let my mate drive it at Goodwood last week and guess what he wants one now to now. If you don't get a 458 you may not be able to get one in the future, but you could alway jump into a Mclaren....imho smile

Cheers

Well, this was not the plan - and I'm very concerned I'm being financially insane. But we have agreed a deal.

The dealer mailed me yesterday, and asked whether I wanted to proceed with the sale. I replied with the same thoughts I'd posted here - I was very surprised by the car - it wasn't what I was expecting and hence I didn't feel it would replace the 360. I did really like it though, and had decided I would like to replace my Aston with one - hence I had advertised my Aston. I said that there was no point me bringing the Aston in for a valuation, because I simply couldn't make up the difference between a part-ex value and the 650. So I wouldn't be buying the car I drove, but would be back to see what they had after selling the Aston.

I was also planning to sell the Alfa - been meaning to even before thinking about McLarens - so intended to advertise that over the weekend too.

He replied and assured me they could do me a good deal if I sent him the details of the Aston.

I replied with the summary of the car, and what it was advertised for. Didn't really expect them to get close.

They called today and offered a reasonable amount - not what I wanted, but certainly closer than I thought it would be. However, to me - it still didn't quite make it.

I said that it wasn't a deal I could take - but I was planning to sell my Alfa too. I told them what I thought was a fair part ex price - and told them that they needed to take the Alfa for that amount, and offer me £x more on the Aston.

Just called back - and they'll do that deal.

It does cause me a few issues - the Aston is obviously worth less than the Ferrari - even when you add a bonus Alfa into the mix - so finding the difference will be a bit of a pain. I also discovered yesterday that I'd locked most of the balance somewhere which would cost me money to withdraw it (don't remember doing that!) - but fortunately, that comes to an end on 24th August.

So the current plan is this :

I am using the Alfa today, so I'll take it to them after work so they can have a quick look. Tomorrow, I will go in the Aston, and assuming they're happy with both - and subject to another test drive in the 650 - I'll sign on the dotted line and pay a deposit - with a view to paying the balance and collecting on the bank holiday week - which by a happy coincidence is the start of a two week break from work - at home.

So subject to them checking my cars / me liking the second drive of the car - by the end of August I'll have a McLaren on the driveway, and a 360 in the garage.

(And no money to put petrol in either of them!)

Ha where there's a will there's a way! Maybe they think that selling the Aston on will be easier than the 360 as for the Alfa not sure! Congrats anyway nice to see them working it out more than one way to skin a cat as they say!

Congrats, think that is a great way forwards and removes all the hassle of having to sell 2 cars privately !

Obviously, we now need the essential pics of the 650 wink

Pics will follow when I collect it - but assuming I sign on the dotted line tomorrow, it won't be collected until around the 27th / 28th. Got to love the fact that a few days will cost me a full months tax.
In fact, for my Aston I had a thread which I updated every few months - much like Justins - and I intend to start one for the 650. Given all the concerns potential buyers have (including me!) I think a few running reports are a good thing (or bad - we'll see!).

I want some opinions actually :

The car I'm planning to buy is a 64 plate with 7k miles on it, in Volcano Orange - which for me is the perfect colour. It has the options I care about (the only ones I really cared about were lift and heated memory seats) but it is relatively light on options.
For the same price, they have a silver one - 16 plate, much higher spec (reversing camera, carbon blades / mirrors, soft close doors etc. etc. ), alcantara interior - 13k miles, but same price.

I think the silver one is the sensible choice (assuming they would be happy to move the deal). But when I look at it, I don't WANT it - whereas when I look at the orange one, I start drooling. I suspect if I chose the silver one I'd regret it a little every day.

You've already answered your own question. You don't buy any of these sorts of cars because it's sensible. It isn't! So why on earth would you buy a car you don't want in a colour you don't much like with some options you don't want and more miles then the one you like. That really would be insane.

Very enjoyable reading your journey through logic. I’m intrigued by the possibility of a 650s but it would mean saying goodbye to two cars I love, unless man maths tells me otherwise. Re ownership, if you haven’t already seen this, worth a watch:

Congratulations! I've enjoyed reading your postings. I'm in a similar dilemma having sold my V12V last month. After 4 Astons I've left the fold. My dream cars are the 458 and Huracan, possibly the 720. Never driven the 650 though. Good luck with it, look forward to seeing some photos and reading more reviews.
