I tend to keep old iPods in my cars, so tried plugging my iPod classic into the USB port today. I don't think it's quite working the way it should.

If I select an album on the iPod before plugging it in, I can select iPod on Iris and can play / pause / skip forwards and backwards and (via settings menu) see a list of the tracks on that album. But I can't browse music - I can't see what else is on the iPod, or see any options for browsing albums / artists etc.

Am I being stupid or is it simply that my iPod is too old?

I had exactly the same problem. It’s time for either a new iPod or transferring your music to a USB memory stick.

Thanks. Guess a memory stick is the answer - when I tried using them many years ago, I remember it being a pain but perhaps things have improved.

Doh! I was being stupid.

In the media option, don't select iPod. Press the browse button next to the iPod.

Can now select whatever I want - USB flash drive would take up less space though so might still switch.

I'm having some additional problems with the stereo.

I'm getting gaps in the sound quite often - it will usually happen at least every 10 mins, and sometimes several times within about 30s. It happens with radio (DAB) and USB flash drive.

When it happened yesterday, I noticed that all of the icons at the top of the screen (Bluetooth, GPS, WiFi etc) all disappeared as the gap occurred.

The gap is about a second or two in length - it's actually very similar to when the audio mutes for the car to play a notification (e.g when it auto lowers) but it's doing it randomly when there is no notification. I do wonder if it's when the IRIS system is 'doing something' and whether it means I need to change some setting by not sure what.

Anybody else had this?

The McLaren DAB radio is awful in the 720S. Takes the Norman Collier broken microphone joke to another level. Constantly losing signal. As for the USB issue, haven’t experienced it.

Have you tried resetting the system? Keep the button depressed for approximately 40 seconds until the screen states reinitialising.

I did that yesterday shortly before I got home - haven't used the car since, so I guess it might have fixed it....

IRIS reset didn't solve it - I'm expecting the car to go back to have the wheels sorted at some point so they can look at it then.

Must confess all the DAB radios I've experienced have the same Norman Collier issue - my other half's 2 year old BMW does exactly the same.

The one in the Aston has one 100yd spot on the M4 between J14 and 15 when it always cuts out.
Otherwise you get 100% radio reception; so no excuses, it can obviously be done.

In my 650 I had something similar when I had turned the sat nav volume down very low. I didn't notice that it was still directing me (my nav is poor at realising "you've arrived" and so tends to keep directing on the following journey) and so muted the audio volume to play me an inaudible direction.

By the sounds of things you may have something more going on if the icons are disappearing too.

The one in my Boxster is really good as well via a screen-inlaid aerial. Better than on our Merc and VW but they're not too bad either.
Is it to do with the carbon fibre construction? The lack of metal meaning the aerial isn't as shielded from the electrical interference generated by the engine? I used to have a similar problem with my TVR in pre-DAB days ...

Have to say on my 600LT once I’ve found my favorite radio station, then it has been superb! Done 100s miles with it and no one single drop/issue. But as said always on same station (and DAB).

The disappearing icons might have been a red herring - it happened that one time but isn't happening every time.

I did just check the navigation and there is no current route. Shame!

Just to be clear - it does not only happen on DAB so it is not a DAB problem. I mostly listen to my own music, and it's happening on that too - I've tried USB stick and iPod and both have the same issue.

Is it possible that you have the speed warning activated with its volume turned down ?

Thanks - pretty sure this was it. Speed warnings were enabled, and when I set a destination in the sat nav, it showed that the volume was turned right down.
I've turned the volume up to a sensible level and for now disabled speed warnings. Not driven it enough to prove it, but pretty sure this will have solved it.

Sadly, reversing it out of the drive caused a more serious fault but I'll detail that elsewhere.

Oh no hope you and the car are ok.

Thanks. Didn't reverse into anything - just an error on the dash.

The McLaren noise when a fault occurs is not nice. More air raid siren than the nice gentle bong most cars give you. It certainly does make you notice it though!
