As Trev said the lights come on automatically - I think in the menus you can specify how long for. If you have them, look at the engine and the lights are clearly visible on either side of the engine. They come on/off when you lock/unlock the car.

All mag ride failures I've read about are progressive i.e. the oil starts to leak but the shock still works but over time they get worse eventually "bottoming out" which could be the "clunk" you witness. If it got to that stage, you need it sorted now.

Alternatives are coil overs, replacements from Audi (£1k each) or a company in Poland refurbish them with a 1 year warranty for 1/2 that cost. All down to you and how deep your pockets are but I'd say 23k is a good innings for mag ride!
would you stick with mag or change to coil over ?

Both of my rears failed at around the same time and although the fronts were fine I elected to change all four.

The passives are conventional coilover dampers. They are slightly stiffer than the magrides when in 'soft' mode but are by no means too hard.

If you stay with the magrides you are looking at about £1K a corner to replace.
you went for coil rather then mag again then .do audi do it or mechanic ?

I'd stick with mag ride, probably go for refurbished ones from Poland as a start. My car is stock and want to keep it that way.
anyone got link to the polish site ?
what sort of price are they & will they last , prob only give 1 year so not long to be faced with problem again ?
I am worried if I fit coilovers that the ride will be hard , I wont track car so I just want a nice soft ride , wont need to adjust just comfy ?

Prices are on the webpage. Also worth noting that I think you need to return your damaged shocks as part of the process i.e. you buy replacements with the pricing including a returnable deposit, they ship them to you, you fit them, you send your old ones back, they refund your deposit.

I think you need to be wary of the internet projecting a true representation of real life. A warranty isn't an indication of how long a product will last - it'll be down to you, how you drive etc. Personally I'm not worried about them lasting a year - had my car for 3 years, non of them have leaked so far.
well that's a good hint that they are good , I will look them up ,thanks
I just don't want to get some other shock that's good on race track but horrible on our pot ridden roads , I wont track car ever ..

think I have done conversion about £1600 for 4 but don't know if this delivered ? the deposit don't matter as you get that back anyway , there is 4 2nd hand on ebay for £600 (1 is leaking the others old !) but could buy & send them off .

Looks like you need to email them to request each shock.

However each shock is 490 Euros plus 400 Euros per shock as the deposit - so you pay 890 Euros per shock and get 400 back when you return the old one.
yes about right then £1600 for 4 , they sent your deposit back all ok then ? its either that or coil overs for £1200 ? just worried that the ride may be harsh.
did you think about changing or did you want to stick with originals from the off ?

The lights are controlled by a button to the right of the steering wheel in my car, that toggles ‘se me home lights’ on and off, and I think you set the delay in the binnacle settings menu

I know a shop that will fabricate the 5 engine bay pieces for you out of real cf for £2500. You can then take your old ones off and keep them and probably resell the cf ones separately when you sell the car and probably get your money back-ish
to be honest I wont be selling this , I love it . looks so good / nice ride / fast enough (not super car quick but ok for our roads !) will sound good when I get my new exhaust fitted (maybe should have kept the £2700 from exhaust for suspension!)

The BC coilovers you've been looking at are from Taiwan and not of a good quality. This is reflected in their price and also the ride quality. If you decide to stay with the magrides, I still have the ones I took off mine and would sell them for a reasonable amount. email me if you're interested. trevor.hartland@btinternet.com
mailed you ..…..

mine is atlas grey with carbon blades which I think is the best colour (imo) but it is a bit boring, as audi is always grey/ black/silver & nice to see them different , the red is really good as well, I nearly purchased one few weeks ago that had been resprayed in the new audi (destroyer grey) very light sort of primer colour , it looked stunning but didn't know because it had been re sprayed would it de value it on re sale ? respray is better than wrap though for resale & must last longer

Depends what you want from the vehicle. Plenty of owners on R8Talk run aftermarket suspension options, albeit ~£1200 is the lower end of the scale.
I have to do something as mine is fked !
I like original suspension buts its £4k to buy the same/original new , so have to look at best way out .

Why can't you just replace the single shock? Or are all four bottoming out?

I really hope you don't have to fork out £4k after just buying the car!
To get 1 shock done is a good idea I didn't think of that !
the only thing is if I change to different set up (like springs etc ) I would have to get them all done obviously
but if I get the original serviced is a good idea , as long as the rest don't go after .
will have a think and thanks .

This.

Sorry to hear about your troubles OP however there has been plenty of talk of pre-purchase inspection in here, and this goes to show why it is recommended.
yes I know but the history / miles/ 1 owner etc was all so good & car is mint so didn't bother , I did try to get ricky who was recommended but he didn't go out to cars any more / audi want you to drop it off, so just took flyer , it might not even be a shock yet as I just heard a knock over the odd pothole , will find out by Monday but just getting ready for the worst case in case … never mind st happens
like the above post I could get 1 shock done which is £400 ..

OP

If you bought from a dealer and pre existing faults exists it’s for them to fix / prove they didn’t exist at sale.

https://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/advice/the...
yes I will see what the damage is & may contact him , its a dealer but he works from home , not like a showroom and he's a nice guy ..

yes guys fully understand all your thoughts which help/ thanks - ..
my views/ position is …..
  • I don't want a hard /racetrack ride as I use on roads .
  • I think from what I read that the mag ride is pretty clever / soft and adapts to road / or fast road well .
  • don't like that they fail after 23k miles
  • I don't like the fact if I replace the one that is clanking (if it is that ) the others can go soon .
  • I don't want to spend on something that's not a good fix .
I am not trying to save money I just want a good option really.

at the end of the day its not a " super car" its a well nice sports / usable car …...

well guys the front 2 are leaking oil & knackered / back seems fine , will go back to dealer to see if he can help out , but don't really know as its old car ?
the mechanic has said just get front 2 done as have 2 but he cant really tell how long rears will last , but I can deal with that when it happens as its not saving any labour time doing 4 ! think I will go to polish company & send 2 in for re furb (costing £435 each )
a couple of people have got some old leaking ones for sale , but no gain really as would need to send off to Poland as well …
there are 2 sorts of mag on r8 , mine are Delphi .
any advice lads before a book ?
