Both beautiful, and both look perfect on the original wheels and tyres. That quite a bug-bare of mine and it was the main thing I tried to get right on my old Maserati Mexico, they must have the original sized tyres and wheels to keep the right look. 15 inch Borrani wires with CN72 Pirelli tyres on mine thumbup



I love the OP's Pantera but for me it would look much better sat on the original sized wheels and tyres.

I went the other way and sold my Mexico (along with an Aston Vantage) and bought a new modern sports car (McLaren 570s), sorry to admit but it's so much more fun than either, so much cheaper to run, and so much more reliable. Albeit a 550, 575 or even a 599 does sound very appealing.

The original 15" Campys with the fat donut tires, do indeed, look classy and right for the era and the car. However, if, as I and many Pantera owners, upgrade the braking system to accommodate a higher performance engine or for track use, the calipers will not fit back under the 15" rims. In addition, there is virtually no availability of the wide tires for those wheels any longer. In my case, when I did the conversion, probably 17 years ago, I went to the 17" Campy clones to keep at least a semblance of the original look while giving me a few (very few) choices on tires

Although I'm partial to Pre L cars, yours was certainly gorgeous and an eye catcher. How long did you own her and when did you sell it?

I had her about 5 years and sold her in, I think, 2016. We had done everything we wanted to and used her without mercy on everything from trans-alpine routes to the drag strip, but ultimately she became a car whose spiralling value stopped the fun and we moved on.

How are you getting on with your search. I fancy a 550 next year and heard from a good source that a specialist sold a nice one for £60k a couple of months back. Most for sale I suspect are SOR and will never sell at current asking prices. Silverstone had trouble shifting much at their Ferrari sale.

The 928 was sitting in traffic in a French city yesterday. We may aswell have been sitting in a UFO given the amount of people stopping to stare and take pics.

Certain designs are timeless

Honestly, this is spot on; it's the design and visceral attraction of these things make them stand out from the crowd, regardless of whether you were alive when they were first produced. Now I'd happily put it down to age, but I genuinely think it's more complicated (and encouraging) than that. In the same way that regulations define how an F1 car looks, anything that was designed with fewer or different regulations stands out.

I use my cars regularly and always favour everyday performance and handling over originality; the consequence is that I can use them and they're regularly seen out and about. What surprised me is, consistently, how much appeal these old things have among younger generations- rumbling through villages in the Miura it's the teenagers who're shouting and waving, in a good way. Driving them, it's the level of connection and engagement you get when NVH comes as standard and you really have to think about how to operate it. As an antidote to the stresses of everyday life they're effective in a way that a modern car can never be. In winter sure, I want to be cocooned in something with heated seats, sat nav and apple carplay, but the rest of the year I can do without it. It's probably an ego thing, but I also get a kick out people coming over to say they've never seen one of these in real life before.

The Islero is the favourite car of Del Hopkins, a man who knows more about older Lambos than almost anyone else.........

One of my current screen saver pics which rotates with other similar examples - I'd happily have either one of those.

We have similar threads to this pop up from time to time and I always come back to the old school stuff, but passing Lamborghini Birmingham at Fort Dunlop the other week I did pull in to have a gander at the Huracans behind the glass, and I have to admit a part of me would love to try one. Then I came home, looked at Pete Coltrin's photos in books of Miuras, Espadas, LP400s and Urracos scattered around the factory or on test and my heart almost skips a beat. The old timers have a certain aura about them, a real sense of glamour which was accentuated by the massive gulf between the 'normal' products of Longbridge, Cowley, Ryton-on-Dunsmore and Luton, and the mind boggling exotica coming out of Northern Italy.....

Yes, fabulous pics thank you.

I used to buy Car magazine monthly as a lad and that issue with the Lambo on the front cover brings back many memories. Am I just being sentimental or was Car magazine back then far superior in terms of scoops, writing and pictures than any rag produced since?

Although not a 'supercar' as such, to me the Mk1 Maser QP is every bit as exotic as the mid engined stuff, this rare RHD one took my breath away at Goodwood back in September....

That car ,seen at Hampton Court concours ,is the only car EVER to win the LM24 and the Mille Miglia ,in the same year too.

Lol, how did we jump from 60s & 70s supercars we oldies remember and are reminiscing over, to some thing from the 1940 biggrin

I'm not that old ,a 60s child.

I've recently become a massive fan of the early Ferrari cars.

Got an email from a guy, yesterday, who produces music videos (I believe), saw pictures of my car, and is doing a shoot next week where all he wants is 1970's supercars and desperately wants to rent my Pantera for the day. It won't be driven, just sitting there looking "pretty." And I can stay and watch after delivering it. And they're paying $400 for a couple of hours. It should be fun, and I should get all sorts of new photos. Stay tuned!
