You've got to truly love an old car, be very rich or very stupid to be spending that sort of money ££ on repairs which essentially don't add value.
If that's a reply to my post, I don't really get your point. You'd have to be absolutely stupid to not spend ~£9k to repair a car that's worth £50k+, and it's not like it's an annual expense.

Overall, my 360 has been very reasonable to run - and on average I'm sure most 430s would be too. But they can throw unexpected big bills if you're unlucky, as can most cars that get discussed in this area if they don't have a warranty.
My broad point was that older cars such as Ferraris invariably throw up big bills as has yours but equally newer stuff can and often does depreciate and effectively can cost the same.

It's great that you love your older Ferrari but they are not for everyone including myself who prefers more contemporary stuff.

I sort of see that point, but if the OP has saved up to buy his first supercar, the prospect of having to fork-out a five-figure repair 12 months later puts a very different strain on the house-hold budget compared to the same five-figure loss as and when they decide to sell it on.

Indeed the purchase amount is a sunk cost so you’ll only realise the depreciation hit when you come to move it on ...a random 7-10k repair bill would make me fall out of love pretty fast with any car. For what it’s worth of the three mentioned I’d have the R8.

At that price point, it's so subjective and very personal. Only you can decide what floats your boat.

In my opinion, the R8 just isn't special enough compared to the others, the F430 sounds fantastic but it is looking its age these days and not in a good way. I'd prefer a 355 I think.

It would be between a Lamborghini and a McLaren for me.

Don't be put off a McLaren. Phenomenonal value just now, warranty is around £3k a year which covers everything. That's actually good value IMO

Until we here what the OP's requirements are and in what order of priority, it'll be hard to make a useful suggestion.

Considering the McLaren warranty/cost comments it sounds like low running costs are important but unsure if anything will trump that?

OP, over to you......

I should prob point out I can’t drive a manual car because of an accident and it needs to be semi comfortable.
My main points would be for something I can take out at weekends. Maybe the odd day in the week if the weather is nice. It won’t do massive mileage 2-3k a year I would guess. I don’t really want something that’s going to be cost me and arm and a leg at each service. Or because things need changing as it getting old which is what puts me off Gallardo/f430. Do love the look of a McLaren but the horror story’s and aftercare really do scare me into a corner. 3kplus a year for warranty also seems quite a lot compare to some other males

I would not change my V12Vantage for any of the above-mentioned cars. I have owned a Gallardo and 430.

It is so subjective as to what you want to get out of it, and what you find attractive. You won't really go wrong with any of them.

For me personally the R8 doesn't cut the mustard, although I am sure it is a great car to drive.

Personally I went for the 430, it was either that or a manual 360. The right colour F1 430 came up at the right price first.

It's everything I want from it. I can take it out for a proper drive and I can sit and look at it. Both make me grin like an idiot. The only downside to buying in the autumn was that it spends more time being looked at than driven. Can't wait for those sunny days.

I don't find it dated and I certainly don't consider it old. There is nothing wrong with "old" cars. If I had to get on.a ferry for a European jaunt tomorrow, I would happily take my 33 year old 911. Just fill it up with petrol and head off, knowing it won't skip a beat.

Financially, you have to go in knowing it's almost certainly going to cost something at some point, probably a lot and you WILL loose money when you sell. Anything else is a bonus.

You've got plenty of time, so get out there and look at a few.

If you're not bothered about attracting attention and favour the full supercar experience over everything else, the Ferrari and Lambo will top the bill.

However you don't mention any of that above although you do mention sensible running costs.

Based on that, the R8 is your car.

Warranty costs are a reality unless you're running a car without one in which case you do need a slush-fund to cover unexpected big bills. That was always drilled into me when I ran a TVR and it applies even more when considering an old Ferrari or Lamborghini.

Given what you say, I would seriously look at a 911 turbo S or a GTS. The PDK gearbox is spot-on and it's probably the safest place to put £80k at the moment.

The McLaren (extended) warranty is far more comprehensive - and covers far more - than most of the competition. Simply looking at the warranty cost gives a false picture. On a car as new as a 570 - it means that your service is very unlikely to have any unexpected costs. Which is definitely not true in the other cars you're considering.

They're not for everybody - and they certainly can have some issues - but I think they compare very very well to the other cars on your list, and I think it's important to compare apples to apples when you're comparing costs.

Warranty on an R8 will set you back c.£1,200 and that covers everything.

I owned one for 2 years and it didn't miss a beat. The only problem was the dealer themselves scratching and denting it when it was in for service.

I'm in the process of changing at the moment and have had several extended test drives in a 570s and in my opinion the R8 wins hands down. Granted It doesn't look as good but it was just as quick, handled similarly but sounded 100 times better.

Also, take some time sitting in and trying the options if you're carrying an injury, even trying the different seat options for the individual cars. Some 'sports' seats are just a little too 'sports' for comfort and some of the cars have off-set pedals which may also compromise your comfort.

I think if running costs are a major concern then a 10-15 year old Ferrari or Lamborghini might always be a little tricky - every noise, every warning light might cause cold sweat ... they are expensive to keep running and can be horribly expensive when stuff goes wrong
When I have a few minutes later I will try to collate some costs from previous experience

……..
Given there is a thread on the Audi forum where the Audi warranty isn't covering the removal of a stuck wheel-nut on a 2 year old car, I'm not sure they would agree that 'it covers everything'.

I do agree the R8 is a good option for the OP though.

Thanks for all the reply’s folks.

I have had some warranty prices back
And McLaren are saying 2500 for 570s
And around 1200 for a service.
Rybrook McLaren

Audi R8 £850 for 24months warranty which to me seem very cheap am I missing something?
And £440 for a inspection and service again seems very cheap. Synter Audi

That’s half the running costs per year on an R8 vs McLaren which to me just speaks out get an Audi.

I do get the r8 isn’t quite as flashy as the main brands. Which to be honest I don’t mind.
Have had a Porsche before in Miami blue and that was badly vandalised one night why just sat on my drive.
So although I love nice flashy cars. I am not fully sure I want something that stand out a million miles. Although it will be garaged now

That's not even into extended warranty terms though. Very odd, I would try another dealer or take it to Kwik Fit who would get it off for free!

Inspection quote sounds correct. The warranty does sound cheap, is that the all bells and whistles one? I think they have 3 tiers to select from.

Not sure why guys are so negative about the R8 but I think they’re too flash. Certainly mid engined German exotic for me. Unless it was a 720s at double the money I’d go R8 as late as possible for £80k. Think you’re safe from 2017 early cars as per all manufacturers had issues. It’s a no brainer if running costs a concern. I think they look great wink

R8 servicing costs are online - it's roughly £500 for a minor, £1,000 for a major.

Warranty of £450 for 2 years is very cheap but it might be because of a newer car? Regardless you can get an R8 warranty quote online here by entering the reg number:

https://www.insurewithaudi.co.uk/extended-warranty

There are two cover types:

All component - pays for the cost of repairing or replacing the factory-fitted mechanical and electrical components of your vehicle should they fail during the cover period.

Named component - Braking system, Clutch, Drive-line components, Electrics, Engine, Gearbox, Heating and cooling system, Locking system, Steering and Suspension system
