Bidding up to the reserve is legal I think and can now be seen being done at Christies, Sothebys etc in their art auctions.

They do however seem to declare that they are doing this as the auction starts. Ive only noticed it in the last year or so.

They've been doing it for years. Called Chandelier Bids. The problem is, it over inflates prices by having people believe there is demand for the product.

400k worth of work. One of the best Ferrari dealers in the business. Where do you start with the reserve 50k? 200k?

I'm going to guess it has an extremely limited market and go with 75k

Been for sale for ages can't remember the asking price, but seriously £400k to convert a Mondial, DK must be laughing all the way to the Leeds and the owner well more money than sense but good luck with the sale.

Probably a good guess. I doubt the reserve is at that level though !

Some of the online auctions explicitly mention they do it in their detailed terms and conditions. I know CarAndCkassic do.
Wow, and there is us feeling like numpties, we just let auctions get what genuine bidders bid it to!

It's all part of the show of an auction, and skill of the auctioneer - not even a secret.
No-one should bid more than they want to pay, just because they get seduced by the warm up act.
If I was CC I'd have auctions closing at 10pm, for the red wine premium on top

I do like CC and I think it is a good platform that is proving it can shift cars and plates very efficiently, even in the current environment. I don't know enough about auctions in general and I am not inferring anything with my question but why would the bidder REGPLATES below increase his bid from £2,500 to £3,000 with no rival bid in a no reserve auction?

Well both bids by REGPLATES show the same time. So it could be the bidder legitimately deciding to increase their bid amount. They might do that if they aren't going to be around to bid further in the auction or to try to put off potential rivals in an auction they want to win. Or it could be someone trying to bid the price up for the seller.

There is a function where you can put a bid but it will automatically increase your bid if a higher bid than yours comes in. This was explained to me previously here and I think on CC it is labeled as an "absentee bid"
Your second point is the only thing that I can think of personally but it is so blatant that I am thinking there must be some other reasonable explanation ...

Am I going crazy?
Last night I was watching the Daytona auction end and looking today it is still going on and ending tonight.
Can anyone confirm or set me straight that that auction did not end last night?

I enquired a while ago about the car. £85,000 would have bought the car so presume reserve will be around that level. It’s such a cool car, would have to be part of a 5+ car garage.. also needs a colour change...

A new competitor to CC, Selecting Gear, kicked off yesterday. Don't know if they are affiliated to Hofmann's but most of their lots are retail stock from that dealer. I guess Hofmann's have seen the success of CC and realised that in the current climate they can potentially offload stock via online auction for close to full retail money but without the warranty costs etc.

They have something I'm considering and it will be interesting to see what the lots fetch compared to what they were asking on the forecourt.

They have a mechanism in place to prevent last minute bid sniping which allows for the losing bidder to have more time to improve their offer - so I guess that's what happened
