Why presume they are in trouble. ? Sounds like a perfect marketing tactic to me,targeting there potentnal audience directly at little cost to themselves... MDMA . said:
The problem is, they want to set the reverse too low, just so they get a sale and their commission. I sold something recently and their reserve price was 40% below what I sold it for.
I see CC as a good place for people who don't know much about cars and get caught up in auction fever.
They do hound people into lowering the reserve just to get their commission. If they tried it on with me or anyone I know they would be told to go forth and multiply and remove the listing immediately. Couldn't you just spare the drama and inform them you'd like to stick to your original reserve?paulguitar said:

I suppose so, but if they recommend the reserve to entice you in and then start hounding you to lower it so they get their commission I think they deserve both barrels of verbal! Perhaps also throw a can of red bull at their office for good measure!
Ot can be a very good option for sellers and carandclsssic types (predominantly older) may not be aware of the platform.
CC did the biz on my porche after having it listed everywhere else for 8 months it was sold in 10 days on CC. Yes I did fall for the reserve lowering although we were very close in my case anyway. It got the car sold and enabled me to jump onto another one so all good.
The amount of bashing they take on here is totally unjustified. Traders (I am one) are the devil incarnate apparently but set up a platform that deprives us of income and they still can't win!
No platform is perfect but it's much better than Ebay and much cheaper than traditional auctions so go in eyes wide open and I don't see the problem with it.
I'm really looking forward to the watch one going live!

Is this the same Collecting Cars who are now making a nuisance of themselves by phoning people who have adverts posted on carandclassic.co.uk, and trying to persuade them to sell their car by auction instead?

They were doing this in the summer. Presumably Collecting Cars is in trouble so they’re resorting to cold calling as a way of drumming up business...

Their foray into selling watches is now open for consignments. Will be interesting to see what happens there too.
So heres my personal experience
- Agree to list car, with reserve
- When car is 3k below reserve I get asked to remove reserve as car will then do better and CC offer to underwrite that they will guarantee i'm no worse than 1k lower than initial reserve. Nothing untoward in their t&c's say they can use their fee to do this.
- By pure chance a bid then comes in at value they offered to underwrite it at, from somebody bidding on 4-5 cars simultaneously. oddly and unexpectedly it then sits for 6 days with no further bids.
- On completion im very suprised to be told the winning buyer is in Hong Kong / China and given a partial telephone number and Gmail address. Oddly t&c's say site only to be used in specific countries and HK / China not on list. Sale suddenly seems much higher risk profile.
- Zero contact from buyer / no response from any emails now for almost 48 hours post sale.
- Speak to CC who suggest they also can't call him, are in dialogue via email, he's now not sure he wants it, but the general gist is as they want their 6% fee irrespective and I need to wait 7 days. If I sell elsewhere and withdraw from this debacle then they will bill me the sale fee.
- Seems if he doesn't complete they just pocket the full sales fee and as a seller tie your car up for an extra week with no sale.
