I keep looking at R8’s and this one caught my eye...

Is it missing anything? Apart from bucket seats? I’d probably swap the standard seats out for some Recaro items assuming they fit?

No mention of carbon engine bay so probably not. The interior colour and black stripes are a personal taste.

Seats come up occasionally but the std seats are ace. That's not cheap for a V8 2008 if you can stretch a bit a V10 maybe in reach?
Depends if you want a newer v8 or an older v10.

Personally I’d stretch to a V10 if you can unless you’ve no aspirations for it. Not as much choice for a manual v10 though. Good luck with your search.

I mapped our S63 yesterday (700hp / 1000nm) and it’s incredible, it’s now got me thinking what that would be like in the AMG GTC which is 400kg lighter, maybe this gives it an edge over the R8 V10 for me..

Looks a decent spec, but expensive for a 2008? I think the standard seats are a huge letdown visually, but can't fault them for comfort and driving position.

One thing I'd forgotten about but rarely gets a mention - the pedals are quite significantly offset towards the middle of the car, to accommodate the front wheel.

Definitely something worth trying to see if that's a problem. It did cause me some issues on longer drives, but my right knee is a bit of a mess from an old injury. I'm amazed the offset isn't mentioned more.

I wander if thats the same for LHD?

Its Something i really disliked about 911s and why i never bought one, steering was offset to centre of seat as well i think..

Unless removable vinyl or something, that paint job is also a bit marmite, so moving it on may take a while.

Can I take it from that you’re saying the Maserati was more compliant over the rough stuff and probably the better tourer? Mine has skyhook so a bit better than std on the GT

Yes, the Maserati GT is far more complaint.

I tend to avoid motorways with the R8. It is not bad but far more fun on the A and B roads.

If you are set on a v8 I’d probably avoid one with magnetic ride as that is a known weak point.

I think that you are being VERY polite!
Each to their own, I suppose?

Cheers, i’ll still give one a go, eyes wide open though.

the AMG gtc ‘with’ AMG ride control (tested with & without) was comparable comfort wise to the maserati, if not better, so sounds like the R8 may fall down a bit in this area..

You’ll do well to find one as most were specced with them (standard on a v10) however my indie said he’d changed about 50 cars away from mag ride.

My front two are beginning to weep so will need replacing next service or MOT.

I did this, deliberately avoided it, I have replaced all struts in my ownership but the total cost is about the same as one mag ride strut. Best avoided in my opinion and the car rides very well without it

They are expensive cars to run if you stay on top of the maintenance IME. You won’t get away with £500 for a service every year on a 12 year old R8

In my 3 years of ownership I’ve found the opposite. I daily my v10 and it’s cost the same to run (bar petrol and tyres) as my wife’s S3. Although I am expecting to replace the mag ride at some point, where I will get the passive setup.

Quite a few early cars now getting up towards 100k miles. I'd imagine this is when servicing and maintenance begins to get a bit more expensive.

I've been trying to guesstimate how low values are going to go. For several years the bottom of the market seemed to be in the £30k range, now in the last 12-18 months it's dipped into the £20k range.

I figure the cost of servicing/maintaining the older, more high mileage cars is going to play a significant factor in where the bottom of the market goes in the next few years.

It's funny, Astons seem to, at most, dip into the teens before nearly always going back up. Masers go down to single figures and can stay there for a decent while before slowly starting to climb once they hit classic status. No rhyme or reason to why one car or marque has better long term residuals over another.

I know a lot of people say the V8/V10 manual is a future classic, and I definitely agree. But I can't imagine there is a big market out there of people willing to drop £3k on a clutch change, or pay for an engine out job to fix the air con, or spend low four figures to replace brakes. That's before you consider the cost of replacing suspension components on the high milers.\

I suspect the cars that are currently £20kers will drop into the teens within the next 1-2 years. I suspect the bottom of the market will be low teens. Maybe even one or two tatty examples getting into four digits.
