Or just lead a very dull life? 9 posts a day is a huge amount to me. You are in my view a Super PH User. Not a sporting user.

Look you pontificate on your views, so tell us what you drive to allow us to give our opinions on your garage.

I had specific reasons behind buying an R8.
It is in the eyes of 99% of people including myself a very special car.
The kind of car which looks amazing, goes faster and handles better than 99% of other road cars. Is mid engined, dry sumped & loooow.
Has side blades. Huge reason to buy one as really only the R8 and the Bugatti Veyron have these. Which also is a VW group product.
Therefore only VW group cars with Side blades can really be classed as Supercars. (This is a joke BTW)

The R8 Can sit outside in all weathers and is to 99% of people a Supercar.
Children and adults come up to have a look as they are very rare.

I would class the new Corvette as getting into Supercar territory. This may not gel with EVO magazines opinion? Readership 30,000. Yes 30,000! Not 300,000 or 3,000,000. That’s 0.045% of the population. So again hardly mass market.

Now a sports car of which I’ve had a few is usually-
Looks good, is front engined (911 excepted), fast-ish, handles well and although not too common you would probably see a few during a days driving around most areas of the country.

Now I don’t want to be a bore but go on show us what you drive.
You’ve gone too far the other way to PH, it’s a great car, but not ‘very special’ nor ‘very rare’.

An R8 is what I’d call a practical supercar with 95% of all the supercar attributes, but without the supercar temperamental foibles.

The thing that puts me off R8’s are some of the older ones have fallen into the void where wannabes drive them, put silly wraps and wheels on them and then drive them like tts for YouTube or Gumball likes.

I've owned and driven an awful lot of different types of cars since the R8 1st came out, but I've never viewed it as a supercar.
Sure. So show us what your driving now. Not just vapourware chat.

What I currently drive doesn't change my view of the R8.

It’ll be something st then. biggrin

However, if the R8 is a super car then so is the 911, and for the same reasons.

If it's about looks and turning heads, check out videos of supercars in London. Yes, you get the McLarens, Ferraris and Lambos but you also see... are you sitting down... R8s.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGfIPqBlerQ (dunno if there are R8s in this one, not seen it yet)
https://youtu.be/bVLTHj62qHM

So it depends on the opinion of the person you speak to. Whose opinions matter the most to you?

On a side note, even my ageing unmodified 996T has people looking at it, little boys pointing excitedly, and, I expect, white van men shaking coffee beans and middle aged women in their 4x4s waggling their little fingers (I wouldn't know - I'm too low to see them).

Too simplistic to say that of “911”s.

GT2, GT2RS, GT3, GT3RS, Turbo S not supercars? Really?

Yes really. They're sports cars, with the exception of the T designed mostly for track use.

I don’t pretend to understand how you justify these distinctions, so maybe it would be more illuminating to start at the beginning.

What are the characteristics of a supercar, what are the characteristics of a sports car, and what is/are the crucial distinction(s) between the two.

And then what’s the difference between a supercar and a hypercar?

So far this entire thread has skimmed over this. It’s impossible to categorise cars into groups without having some idea of the requirements of the group.

Thread can be summed up as PH User , in his opinions, says R8 isn’t a Supercar. Therefore anyone who says it is is wrong and he must argue the point because his opinion is right and anyone else is wrong.

Hes right, i has been done to death, there is no conclusion, only individuals opinions on why.

the longer standing petrol heads of the 80s 90s 00s have a very clear idea of what a supercar is but its based on experience, history and to some extent the ‘inconvenience’ of a supercar.

The advent of the everyday supercar was a bit of an oxymoron to many, as having fuel spat at you and having to open a door to reverse your car is some of what defined a supercar, a younger generation wont get that as theres nostalgia involved.

They had to create a new label for supercars because of the above and they’re now called Hypercars, very few named supercars today that are useable, remain supercars in the older generations heads (maybe mclaren)

just rambling thoughts from an old codger.. dont mind me..

I choose not to answer the question, because it's been rehashed time after time and boils down to personal opinion.

Where have I suggested that my opinion is the only one that counts and everyone else is wrong?

Holy st five pages of is an R8 a supercar or not, I'm pretty sure that wasn't the OP's question!
I would go with one of Ferrari's if you want a Supercar as a daily or go with whatever makes you smile.

Because every time someone has suggested it is a Supercar you’ve immediately responded that it isn’t.

I have have responded on a few posts by saying that I don't think it is, but that's very different from what you're suggesting.

I had an R8 following me earlier, and I thought 'ooh cool, an r8!!' And it did indeed look cool in the rear view mirror.
The difference for me is if it had been a Ferrari, McLaren, Lamborghini etc I would have thought 'wow! A Ferrari/McLaren etc'.
That for me is the undefinable difference between a supercar and not a supercar. Obviously that's just me, and even though I have my own ideas on what us and what isn't a supercar, I certainly wouldn't waste my day arguing about it as it doesn't really have a set in stone definition.

In response to the OP, and based on no experience whatsoever, I would be looking at an FF or California for an everyday supercar, they are certainly the 2 cars that would fit the bill for me, and I'm not even particularly a fan of Ferrari's
