I'm looking to replace our Evora 400 with something interesting. We use it as a second car, not just a weekend toy so it needs to be something that won't require a mechanic on a weekly basis. Budget is up to £100k and I want a main dealer warranty (so this limits choice a certain extent). I also probably wouldn't consider anything with more than 30k on the clock. What should I be looking at?

Ever owned a convertible? Certainly a different experience.

For that money you'd get into a blisteringly fast Mercedes AMG GT

Ferrari Cali T

Surprisingly practical everyday drivers. They have the ground clearance of a saloon and the ability to swallow a significant amount of luggage.


Here's a beautiful one from a main dealer.

Lots of Lotus owners switch to McLaren. So many similarities and the engineers are always trading jobs between both companies. With £100k I would go for a 650S, buy with a warranty and actually don't be scared of mileage, they more they are used the better.

I thought of that too but considered that a Macca doesn't really meet the second car vs weekend toy brief....

I'm interested to know why would you think that? Many McLaren owners daily their cars, they are absolutely fine to use as a second or primary car (if you don't have a family). The McLaren USP is they are super fast super cars at weekends with the ability to be an amazing relaxed car with very comfortable suspension and a large frunk when you are dilly-dallying around. Plus 30mpg easily attainable on the m-way.

Low slung driving position and lack of enough storage in the frunk put it in the weekend toy category. (At least they do for me!).

Thanks for the suggestions so far. On the AMG GT, I really like these, especially the GTC which I think is just about achievable with my budget (sometimes). The issue is, I have an E63S saloon which I'm keeping for the family car and I don't want two Mercs on the driveway.

650S is something I've also mulled over for a while now. Buying is a minefield though and I'm slightly put off by the fact that hardly any McLaren dealers touch them anymore. Also, its hard not to play the "but for just XXX more I could get XXX" game and then end up in a 720S or 600LT. Hmmm.

The California is not something I've considered so I will do some research. I've always thought of them as "not proper Ferraris" but thats only because my knowledge of them so far has come from reading internet fora.

This goes for an awful lot of cars, not just McLaren. It used to be that performance cars weren't properly engineered and problems would start to creep in with wear if they were actually used, but those days are mostly gone. I'd chose a higher mileage car that had actually been used and properly maintained over one that had just seen occasional weekend use any day of the week. I never set out with a target maximum mileage in mind, and always buy on history and condition.

The McLaren 570S is almost impossible to beat for that budget and criteria. IMO.

A logical move from an Evora (exactly what I did!)

Absolutely HUGE frunk, enough for me and my wife to go on quite a few euro tours for 2 weeks. The parcel shelf in the coupes or under the tonneau in the spiders also holds a lot of luggage too. You need to take a look at a P11 McLaren, they really are good and the MPG is amazing too, a bonus just now over the Italian offerings.

If you want something properly reliable and everyday useable you could have a look at American imports so long as you're comfortable with LHD, or even a RHD Mustang. A big V8 is a very different experience.
