Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder launches

More power, faster acceleration and a real fancy roof

Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder
Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder
Lamborghini launched the Gallardo Spyder at Frankfurt Motor Show this week, as previewed right here on PistonHeads yesterday -- see link below. Lambo claimed that the car is "not just an open-top version of the coupé, but a completely new model" -- which many might argue is a pitch too far.

Changes to the Coupé's engine and transmission system include a 10 per cent power boost from the 4.9-litre V10, which now develops 520bhp at 8,000rpm. It goes through a six-speed gearbox with new lower ratios: first gear is 27 per cent lower, second gear 13 per cent. Third, fourth and fifth gears are all six per cent lower, while sixth gear is 3.5 per cent lower. It'll reach a top speed of 196mph with the roof up and 192mph with it down, accelerating from 0 to 62mph in 4.3 seconds.

Lamborghini said the steering is more direct and precise, and the suspension has been recalibrated. The Spyder is built using aluminium bodywork and features permanent four-wheel drive, like other Lambos. Chassis reinforcements include added material in the sill area, strengthened A pillars plus an automatic pop-up roll-over protection -- the company didn't say how much weight they add.

Standard equipment includes power steering fluid cooler, automatic door locking at speeds of over 9mph, and the Lamborghini Multimedia System will be included as standard on UK cars.

They're proud of the roof

The roof opening system is unique. It's operated using two dash-mounted buttons, and takes 20 seconds to raise or lower. An electronic control system controls the movement of the fabric roof, which is stored in the engine compartment and covered by the carbon fibre engine bonnet that also functions as a hood cover. Electric actuators lock the catch at the front of the hood and release the bonnet catch, and a separate motor raises and lowers the rear window.

The rear screen moves automatically while the roof is being opened or closed. This automatically-controlled movement always returns the screen to the raised position. The driver can choose to have the screen in the lowered position (including when the roof is raised) by pressing the appropriate button on the dashboard. A ‘service function’ positions the roof to allow access to the engine.

Options

There's a range of new body and interior leather colours available and optional equipment includes a video camera on the rear spoiler (also available on the coupé version); new colour/perforated leather combinations for the dashboard, seats and door trim, and contrast colour stitching.

Other options include a security system, heated mirrors, onboard computer, protective cover, ‘coming home’ function, e-gear, set of two suitcases, lifting system, navigation system, coloured Lamborghini logo on wheel rims, rear spoiler and a smokers’ version. Silver Callisto wheels, heated electric seats and coloured brake calipers are available. Customisation packs include a leather package, carbon fibre package, branding package, winter package, travel set and sports set-up.

The marque’s fourth model, the Spyder will be available in the UK from spring 2006, priced at around £130,000. It's a steal.

Lambo are really growing under VAG. If I were in the position of looking for a two seat sports car at any cost I would choose a Galliardo. It just looks 'right'. I'd need an AMV8 for the shopping trips though!!!!!!!!

Money no object I'd rather the Murcielago or a Porsche CGT, the F430 would make the choice difficult in this 'segment' of the market. AMV8 and various Porsches for a cheaper price wouldn't make it any easier though. It'd be nice to be in the position of having to decide though

The Gallardo suits its purpose though. My boss loves hooning down backroads and the Murcie is just too wide for that kind of driving. The G is really chuckable.

Wish it had scissor doors though... (and not those fake Affolter ones that look crap..)

Won't argue with you there.

Is it me or does this 'very special roof' sound no different to everyone else's with the exception of a rear screen you can pop up and down?

I was hoping they'd have the balls to put the Concept-S Roadster into production with its Batman-style twin-cowl windscreens.

That would have been really cool, they should make it a short run limited edition, like Porsche did with the speedster. Wouldn't be that hard and gives the car a bit of mystique.

Needs a glass rear deck though, and it doesn't appear to be on the options list...

At 130K isn't this starting to creep up into Murcilago (sp?) territory. I thought this and the F430 were supposed to be the entry level cars of the Ferrari/Lambo range? At this rate in 2-3 years time they'll be looking to create new 100K entry level models that undercut the existing entry level modules.

they ARE producing a run of the oncept-S - been on this site a few times now! think they're making about 250 of them. quite tempting.

what I'd like to know is what's a 'coming home' function?!

The whole engine cover raises and the hood disapears beneath. So no, not like everyone elses.

Its just an integrated Garage door/Gate opener.

Can be programmed to open 3 different devices (the gates at each of your houses perhaps).

And before you say it, no its not something I would or did pick.

I always wondered what the device really was.I presumed, ahem,it was a device that helped block lasers.
But also opens garage doors obviously.Just a coincidence that speed detection equipment seems to go a bit haywire.

Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

The coming home function leaves the headlights on for a minute or so once the doors are locked so the owner can see where they are walking at night. Very Audi/Merc! Not sure on the garage/gate thing though!

Good idea: a new entry level 'Jalpa / Silhouette / Urraco' kind of V8 car . . .

. . . along with that - black - Espada concept it would establish the Lambo-brand for the next 10 years.

i feel somehow cheated. I was hoping it was like the driver ni MIB2 or something....would be so much better!

and yeah - charging extra for heated wing mirrors. dear god. One of the disadvantages of Audi ownership maybe. Have to say that the benefits massively outweigh the downsides though!

But it gets worse. Alot of the early orders placed by speculators (who obviously ordered minimal spec) didn't have that option ticked. LOL
