Which out of the above is the better purchase at the moment?
Main criteria - percentage of value retained over 18 months (i.e. my next car change!)...

I love the drama of the Diablo VT - great looking car, such drama, such excitement and hell the noise! Still - will it bankrupt me on servicing or its value drop like a stone, compared to a 360?

360 - brilliant car, and pricewise rather tempting right now - depreciation has done it's job and a good car could retain a very large percentage of the purchase price at the moment over 18 months.

If you want a daily driver, then I guess the 996 is going to be the least trouble.. but also the least stirring too.

Funny was musing over a Diablo SV today, but the interior is starting to look dated and I just know it'd ruin me financially.. and perhaps a bit too big for UK backroads ? I think someone said that the only people who enjoy the Diablo are those on the outside, watching it go by.

For me it'll have to be the 360, one of the best handling cars I've driven, light, go-kart like, has enough "wow" factor without too many mechanical nightmares.

Get a spider..

mwah ha ha. This is the problem (if you can call it a problem).
To clarify - don't need a daily driver - not driven daily for 5 years now - it's weekends and fun car only.

360 is more modern, probably more reliable, probably cheaper to run.
But the Diablo is just so damn cool, and will probably retain much more of that 70k over 3 years than the 360 - probably cancelling out the other costs overall.

Assuming that a lambo at 70 will trade for around 55-60 after 3 years all being even, and the 360 will probably trade at something around 45. Sound reasonable at all or am I over / under estimating?)

Rich, sorry I didn't reply to your mail yesterday ...have been snowed at work. Will get around to it later today or tomorrow, or we could just have a chat on the phone tomorrow.

As for the Diablo being a tank ...can you remember the Friday run at Le Mans last year on the country B roads??? ...there were no 360's anywhere near the Diablo!! I think that by the time we got to Chartres-s-Loire it was Diablo and (a hot) VX220 only!!!

Btw, are you going to Le Mans this year??

Have you driven a Diablo Tony ? See if you can get one for a test drive and give it some back road hustling.

Could some of that been down to the driver ?? There's a surprising number of heroically driven Mondeos near my village.. I'm sure they're faster point to point than me !

Yeah - but be fair, no doubt the 360 drivers had to stop to re-arrange their hair-do's !!

Word is the driver had forgotten his chest medallion in the gay village and was so desperate to go back to get it that he ran every red light in sight

me too mate - so no worries - I'm in the thinking about it again stage so no mental rush. If you've got 5 minutes for a quick chat during the day tomorrow that would be cool though. Think I've discounted the 6litre - would be great but they're still priced a bit high for me to do it with any safety margin!

Ahh the friday run - diablo prooved itself on the back roads there. A LHD would make even more sense seeing as I tend to do most of my 'fun' milage over the waters anyway!

As for LM - I've got a mates stag do this year on the saturday night so it looks like I'll not be able to make it - gutted

I guess after all it's a bit academic and I suppose until I drive a VT back to back with a 360 I'm not going to know.

One final point - Diablo roadster - does it have the structural integrity of the coupe? Is there more headroom? Will it hold value better than a coupe on the basis that there are less about?

The problem I have with Diablos.. is that while they look the business.. um.. that's about it.

They're not particularly fast (when compared to say a 911 Turbo), not practical (rear view anyone ?) and huge outside for such a cramped inside.. and not particularly easy to drive.. and that's before we get onto the high maintenance and fragility of them.

It strikes me, that the only people who benefit from the experience are those not sat inside it..

No, they also sound the business and have the performance and handling to match!
GT2man-2 said:

Depends what you call fast but when I look up the performance figures in the magazines, they look pretty good to me.... and in practice on the roads I can assure you that they are not slouches.... I have been out for runs with a few PH'ers and I don't think that many would say that it is not fast... ok probably not as fast as a 911 Turbo but the margin of difference is not that huge.
GT2man-2 said:

I have no problems reversing into a single garage with it, and whilst driving have honestly never had problems with rear-ward visibility.... observation and anticipation come to mind.
The interior is obviously that of a two seater but not exactly what I'd call cramped, even if 'C3 GTK' and myself are in the car together (both having eaten too many pies), there's still a good foot of space between our shoulders... if anything most people comment on how much space it does have in comparison to what they had believed.
GT2man-2 said:

... in what sense, I drive mine in central London without any problems. I have been known to let friends and family drive it, and none have found it to be the monster that some people like to suggest (C3 GTK, Iguana, Mungo... care to comment?)
GT2man-2 said:

I don't want to tempt fate here and I've only done about 5k miles, but it's been a sight better than some brand new Italian exotica that I have witnessed over the last year... or certain British cars for that matter.... only been let down once, and that was with an oil pipe failure (but if I'd looked on the garage floor before going out, then a few clues would have saved me the AA call). Cost of repair was negligible, in fact the repair and first service and brake pads all round was just over £800 at a good independent (Mike Pullen at Carrera Sports)

I've had four 911's previously (admittedly not Turbo's or RS's) and at this time, even though I'm a Porsche fan, I think my next purchase will have a bull on the front

And Bebs, just for you and to reply to the "Tank" comment, here's another quote from 28th Jan 2004:-

Similarly, try to keep up with Tony in his Diablo on Essex B roads and you just won't have any questions about handling, speed, sound etc. Apart from making me wish I'd brought the Ferrari instead, it's the first time in my life I've lusted after a Lamborghini.

Ahh some 'waking the dead' action from Tony there
Guess I'll have to call you Trevor Eve from now on eh!

Very amusing digging up the old threads there, guess the search facility is back on again then! Been trying to dig up old threads on this all week to no avail!

-- "Whoops GT2man.. bet you hadn't reckoned on that one coming back to you "

I don't understand your point. I made some comments which I stood by then, and stand by now.. so I'm not sure how it's "come back to me".. The comment I made about those on the outside being the ones benefitting from a Diablo was taken from a magazine article. I didn't realise I wasn't allowed to re-iterate a comment made 18 months ago.. My bad.

Clearly my words touched a nerve with Tony.. I can't say that I can recall anything he's ever said
