A friend of mine is thinking of buying a 308 GTS (couldn't persuade him onto the Tivs!) but doesn't really know where to start in terms of where to look for cars, what to look for on the cars and what to expect to pay. Also, he wonders about reliability, rusting, servicing and running costs... ANy top tips would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

There's my buyers guide here :

www.fugazi.co.uk/308/MainPage.htm

Or this previous post :

Or search the web, there's loads and loads of stuff if you look :

Or email me offline with any specific queries.

Rough answers to your specific questions :

Where to look : main dealers are expensive, go for the specialists or the private ads. Also, worth joining the FOC, they have plenty of ads and "insider" knowledge.

What to look for : rust in sills, bottom of doors. Bullet proof service history.

What to pay : 20k to 30k. There are cheaper cars, esp at the moment (current bad market) but I wouldn't touch them (IMO). 30k is pushing it, again coz of the current market.

Reliability : better than a tiv ! Seriously, the 308 is the easiest and least painful way into prancing horse ownership. Bulletproof engines. Only really suffer from the occasional obligatory Italian electrial problem (gross generalisation I know)

Rusting : sills and bottom of doors. main structure of the car is a space frame chassis, which rarely (if ever) rusts. floor, front "clip" (valance, below swage line) and rear "clip" is fibreglass, spare wheel cover is alloy, so are other bits.

Servicing : 3k or annually for a carb car. 500-600 a pop, 1200 every 3 years for the cam belts.

Running costs : 15mpg-20mpg. Insurance is £450pa (3000 miles, AON)
