Purchase Price:

Value Now:

My father purchased this car in Italy for me after the end of its racing career. It had damage to the bodywork and was looking very sorry for itself. My intention was to bring it back to the UK and have it restored. Unfortunately I was young and foolish and didn't realise how much that would cost. After throwing a few thousand away on what the restorers described as "a scruffy old Italian car with no real racing history" dad persuaded me to sell it (I did at least make a small profit and bought an Austin Mini Cooper from the man himself) and it eventually went to the states. If I'd left it in a barn, unrestored it would have been worth around £4m at the height of the boom. Some you win, some you lose.
How heart-rendingly depressing! That would be on a par with losing a winning lottery ticket - very difficult not to spend the rest of your life wallowing in "what if?"

I can't complain, I've had a good run with cars (and life) really. Some of the cars was possible to buy for peanuts when I was young would be worth a fortune now. It would have been far more galling to have bought a 250LM at the height of the boom only to have seen its value plummet.

Yours, Jon Dokic

One could say the same about you Benno..

Jon seems to be replying to threads and imparting knowledge that seems pretty accurate to me (I know little) and knowledge that ties up quite well with his sons posts.

He also replies in a quite erudite way which to me suggests an older (wiser) gentleman with an older education (sorry Jon !! )

Does it not also make sense that a man who has varied business interests could now afford to take things a little easier in life having made his mark ?

I must say I would seriously like to meet Jon and see some of his beasts in the flesh or at least piccies. Esp the F1..

Bennno, you're beginning to sound petty and jealous. My discussions with JD offline have given me no cause to question his integrity. Please shut up unless you've got something positive to add.

Humblest apologies Ted (and jon if reading!), my only point was that there is no real way of substanciating much of what people claim or write on the internet! If you say jd is the real thing, then hats off to him and major respect for doing exactly what most of us would do in his position.

Anyway I have a bugatti veyron on order, and just took delivery of a F50 to go with my F40 and a EB220 so I am not jealous.

Even if JD's experiences were pure fiction they make more interesting reading than your petty jibes Bennno. You used to have some interesting comments to make, what happened?

Sorry to but into this, but just for a minute take a step back and be realistic. If a bloke you had never met told you in the pub he owned the cars on jd's list you would probably laugh and order a pint of whatever he was drinking. Judging by the reaction of some people it's clear that jd does own the cars he says he does, either that or you are all in on the joke..

My point is that we don't all know each other personally here and you have no way of telling whether or not they are telling porkies. What often happens is that when you flame someone, even in a jokey way you always get a load of pals wading in with defensive replies and insults.
I would wager that loads of people have looked at jon's profile and muttered to themselves "McLaren F1? F**K off!!" The only way to find out is to ask, whether it be rude or not is a bone of contention isn't it? There is no nice way of calling a bloke a liar is there? I'm hardly going to send a bloke I have never met a private mail saying that I think his list is fictional.

I think we should draw a line on this.

Jon, If I offended you I apologise. don't go away. Stay and tell us your stories. It would be extremely sad and churlish to stop contributing because of this.

As for any of us being jealous, that is ridiculous. I have never been jealous of anyone in my life, and I would say it's the trait I detest most in people. I know benno well and I also know that he isn't that way either.

Thanks Flasher, that seems a reasonable way to draw the subject to a close...
