Was the red 456 at Warwick Uni anyone on here? Private plate with two letters and two numbers. If you are on here, I salute your choice of car and applaud you for using it on such a crappy day! Made my day for sure.

Back in 1996, when I was at university, an overseas student from Thailand bought a one year old Ferrari 355. Cost him £12K to insure it. All paid for on a black American Express.
Different world - money was a total irrelevance to him. Bloody nice bloke though.

I know what you mean.

When I was doing my A levels (private 6th form college) we had quite a few pupils from Malaysia and Brunei. All of their parents were high ranking public figures or prominenent businessmen.

One of the Bruneians in my class turned up on his first day in a cheauffer driven roller. No fuss, no palava, it just sweeps into the yard, driver (full uniform and cap) gets out and opens the door and out pops this 16 year old kid decked out in Armani. And he was a top bloke as well. None of the pretentiousness or snobbery that you often get with rich kids in this country.

On the subject of 456's my old man is looking at 4 of them today. I really want him to get a blue manual but the vast majority of them at (vaguely) sensible money are auto's.

Obviously dont mind either, just cant wait to get my hands on it!

As an ex Warwick Student I'd have to say that it probably isn't belonging to a student or a member of uni staff - Warwick makes an absolute fortune each year running conferences. (In fact it used to be said that it makes a lot more money doing this than it ever does from being a university!)
One student while I was there had a lotus elan - he bought it brand new on the back of the royalties he made out of writing early PC games!

Hats off the the old man. He saw 5 456's on Friday and has bought a silver GTA. Looks lovely with dark charcoal interior with silver piping.

I would have preferred a manual but I think the GTA will suit him better.

Good news is I will be on the insurance so should be able to get my grubby mits on it in a couple of weeks!

Phil

He is going to continue to use a well known guy called Bob Houghton. He operates from what used to be MHT in Northleach. They were recently bought out by Dick Lovett but I think they have transferred the sales side to Cardiff (Been down to Penarth Road a few times for a nose but I dont think the showroom is finished yet.

Bob looks after Nick Masons cars and his 250 GTO has been there a few times. An amazing place. Last time I went there were 8 F40's, an F50 countless 355's 360's and a 288 GTO. They also had a lot of classic Ferraris worth serious money.

I cant wait to drive it. Just have to keep reminding myself to be very careful. I heard somewhere that a new bonnet is about £8K!!!

i really do think that 456gt belongs to a student. cos as far as i know, nowadays unis in this country have more overseas students than before(they pay £7000- £18000 a year to unis) and most of them r f***ing rich. some of my mates r chinese in the uni. and some of them drive the new Z4, highly tuned supras, range rover on 22", NSX...... but i must say most of them don't even have a driving licence. once they r caught they'll just say they don't really know the laws in this coutry. and then cops or judges will just send them free. at least one of them had this kind of experience. but they'r nice though.

Um... didn't think ignorance was a legitimate excuse for breaking the law. Otherwise next time you get gatso'd claim you didn't realise the speed limit was 30 or something?

Assuming they're for real, what happens when they hit someone else on the road?

Without a license, they'll have no insurance. And without that, if they hit someone else, then that someone will almost certainly get stung as they'll have to cough on their insurance etc etc.

Annoys the hell out of me when you hear of situations like this. If they're genuinely wealthy foreign nationals and get caught, they should have funds confiscated and be deported.

I was wondering, say if you privately bought a 456/550 & it had major engine probs & needed a replacement.
What would you do?
Would you seriously need to lay out £30-40K for a new one?
I've heard even the formula warranty's only allow a £10K max per claim.

Davey
When are you taking me for a passenger ride then?

How are you doing Dick?

The parents live in Lisvane so you should see it out and about quite a bit.

Phil not sure about the engine work. I posted on Ferrarichat about the gearbox repairs. Apparently they send them to a British specialist anyway but I still think it would be quite a few ££££££ to fix if it goes pop.

I will have to make sure I treat her gently when I get behind the wheel

P.S I'm sure we can sort out a spin at some point in the summer

Not bad mate.

Off to shell out yet more cash on the Elise this afternoon. Full set of Tyres for just shy of £500. This is on top of the £850 service it had last month!

Still could be worse I suppose.

I think the 456 is being picked up sometime next week so it should be out and about a fair bit as long as its not pi$$ing down

£500 for a set of boots for an Elise?
I've just put two rears RE040s - 225/45:17s on my S2 111S, and they were £104 each. Fronts are considerable cheaper. How did you manage to spend £500? Was it a specialist tyre of some sort?
