I've just put a number plate in the Classifieds that would suit a fast exotic. It's LV51FER and it's not cheap. I was going to put it on a Corvette Z06 but the car I've bought is pre September 2001 so I can't use it. I may auction it at some point or I may just keep it until I get another car. LOL.

so you paid £499 for it about 12 months ago, as we can see from the post by DickD.

now you want £20k for a plate that spells a word incorrectly.

if you manage to sell the plate for anything like that price, send the buyer around to my house will you, I can sell him some second hand fag ends for £20 each.

Hey, start high. You think that's funny. Should see G16GLE for £30k.LOL.

'Fraid I missed the other thread but as I discovered when watching "Number Plate Heaven" and looking through the ads (HU51LER for sale at £15k), there are a million plates out there that cost a lot of money that are far worse.

A plate is worth as much as someone will pay for it - same as anything else.

"Start high" indeed. Should have kept this one under your hat as I can see this thread is set up for a laugh.

Unfortunately mate, most of the big boys here on PH have made their money through hard/smart work. This requires a brain that functions and a good mind for business (i.e knowing the true value of something).

Holding your breath until it's sold might not be a great idea All IMO of course.

Good luck.

Hilarious, I was about to sort myself a private plate, then when I actually paid attention to the plates I've seen on various marques, have decided against it until I get something that actually means something. Most of us work ridiculously hard to get the nice material things.

He might as well be cyber-squatting on lookatmytinybulge.com

plates are worth what some punter (deluded or not will pay for them)

What would you give for R 10 FMU ?

A mate of mine got a new Audi TT (£26K) for it a year ago because if you re space it is becomes

Rio F MU (or Rio Ferdinand Man Utd) and he was beating people off with a 5hitty stick who wanted to buy it!!!! (not Rio himself interestingly though they did discuss it)

He bought it for £250 just before the deal to take Rio from Leeds to Man U was signed!

Since then I've seen the cherished plate market in a different light

Just my £0.02 worth:

I have come to see the personal reg number market in a different light recently too, after too seeing how much people are willing to pay for plates. As stated it really comes down to how much a person percieves a plate to be worth........ rational thought does'nt come into the situation that much as all plates are an extravagance IMO, it all depends how much you can afford to pay in the end. The Kahn dealer in Bradford has lots of plates for sale, how does £350K sound for 5IR the plate currently resides on the Arnage they have for sale.

I bought my plate as an investment; D19 TVR reading DIg TVR, if I were to sell it maybe the right person will offer me alot more than I paid for it, maybe not. Lu5Ifer is taking a chance and fair play to him!

probably the person who'd by the plate is the same people who buy a £1 coin on ebay for £10 or whatever.I have a cousin who (loves maxxed up fiestas, dump valves, vin diesel his favourite actor etc etc) was saying how cool some plate that spelt oral sex backwards was.It was 50 grand or something.I pointed out that how often do you look in your rearview mirror and read someones number plate?Nuff said.Probably explains though how he lost money on a pyramid scheme and replies to those texts saying he's won a prize. There may be a goon out there but I think the people on this board are a bit more sussed actually.

LOL! Like many of you I don't get the vanity plate thing either, but there are clearly people out there who are into it, so while there are where's the harm in the bloke trying to make a buck on the plate?

The one that makes me laugh is all the BM's round my way with number plates starting M3 *** or X5 *** or whatever. Do they think people can't read the badge BMW has kindly stuck on the boot or something?! Still, very considerate of them to spend their money helping short sighted people identify their cars.

I agree that the esteemed folk on PH are alot more clued up than most. But a person who has the resources to pay £350K for a no plate is probably not a goon (business wise) by virtue of the fact he can consider buying the plate in the first place. Maybe he/she sees it as a good investment or knows where to sell the plate on for a profit?

Its all relative I suppose, the plates on many of the cars at a PH meet will prob cost more than a decent second hand family car. The owners of said family cars may think it ludicrous that people will spent thousands on a no plate, along the same lines many of us think it madness to pay hundreds of thousands for a plate.

Just my opinion

Nice pair of cars you have there Nickster.

cheers mod500,you are right.
I was told by a tailors yesterday it would cost 15 quid to sow a button on a jacket. It wont make a difference to my life, but £15 for a button? But yes its all relative. If I were the sultan of brunei I wouldnt have flinched. So fair point. But back to the subject of numberplates - I think alot of people have their plates valued by numberplate dealers and get an inflated estimate.Someone recently had a plate valued that was on some moped they'd been given.Number guy842v was valued at £850 buy a dealer. The dealer didnt offer to take the plate off him though.

Nobody knows better tha I what a plate is worth. to me, it's worth what I paid for it. To anyone else, it may be worth nothing. However, the point here is that ludicrous prices have been paid in the past for number plates.

Of course, it's all too easy to come along and play the sophisticated genius who would never be drawn into such a transactions but at least the plate says something and whilst there is a lot of self-congratulatory back-slapping going on about not being duped, there are doubtless plenty of you who actually do have a "personalised plate" on your cars, albeit purchased for a lesser amount. This, of course, represents the classic "you're not as clever as you think you are" because the DVLA gave you a plate for your car for nothing so the principle of vanity is established and only the cost is in issue.

It reminds me of the guy who asked a woman to sleep with him for a million pounds and she agrees. He asks her if she'll sleep with him for 50p and she says "What sort of a woman do you take me for?" He replies "We've already established that, we're just haggling about the terms".

At least this plate says something and means something and from my point of view, whether mis-spelt or not, it does look good without exercising much imagination. This is in direct contrast to having a plate with your initials on because nobody knows what your initials are and to them, it's just "a plate" and not in the least personalised. From that viewpoint, it's a waste of money. I had a car with three letters and ending 55K which I used as a "private plate" because no-one knew if they were my initials or not and that was free.

I'm fairly sure you're all pretty sharp and so wouldn't entertain buying such a plate. You may be right that perhaps the airheads who read Variety might be the better place to sell but at the end of the day, it's all irrelevant. Advertising a price doesn't make it worth that price. It's a simple case of have and have not. So I'll probably keep it or auction it but I'm pretty certain it's worth more than I paid for it.

The fact remains that there was a time when evry person in the UK had a short pithy plate but as I've found from scouring the DVLA website, all the good ones are, in the main, either gone or the DVLA have sidetracked them to the auction.

I've seen some of the plates they auction and they're pretty poor. Had they spotted this one, I'm sure they would have sidelined it too.

I'll add only this - I've seen many, many things on cars that cost a lot of money that are a bigger load of b***x than a number plate, usually made of "carbon fibre" and many, many exorbitant accessories that aren't worth threepence that get bought because they have a "designer label".

Nickster - perhaps you were being charged so much as, come spring time, you'll have a number of other buttons automatically cropping up on your garment?

LuSIfer - very very good retort.

I may have been judgemental initially but am man enough to listen to peoples arguments and you put it forward very well - no real surprise seeing as what you do for a living

And if you profit from selling the plate on, good for you.
