Hi everyone,

I just got off the phone to Admiral and they told me that for the Dream Rides the passenger is NOT covered, because my policy is social and commuting, and this would be classified as business use. I explained that there is no reward and therefore this is not for any business purpose, but they have categorically informed me that in the event of any accident my passenger would not be covered. The car and myself would be, however.

In order to have the passenger covered, they would want me to upgrade my policy to full business use for the entire duration of the policy, which would be over £200!

So my question is, do passengers sign a disclaimer of any sort, or would they expect to be covered by the drivers insurance, because if not then I'm afraid I will have to withdraw from this, and all other Dream Rides. frown

d

EDIT: I also have asked about passenger insurance for the track, using MORIS and they will only cover a named passenger, and need all the details in advance. So again, will there be a disclaimer that the passenger will NOT be covered for personal accident insurance?

I had to sign a disclaimer when I had a passenger ride at the nec. Give admiral another call. I have found with them you get completely different response depending on who you talk to. Also ring the number that is on your renewal. They are always more helpful and understandable than the hotline on the website which drags you to a call centre In India smile

Hi Dave,

I have just got of the phone from Admiral, all sorted in less than 5 minutes, the guy I spoke to Googled Sporting Bears as he hadn't heard of them before, went and had a chat to his manager and said no problem, letter in the post tonight and just waiting for email confirmation.

Hope this helps - I called the customer serive number on my policy - I'm sure it wont make any difference but mine is a multi car policy - Very helpful and stress free!

Hope we see you on the day.
Cheers
Paul

just to recap after reading the last few posts, if you are offering your services to take members of the public for a ride in your car with the dream rides/sporting bears scheme, I have to have a letter from my insurance company saying I am covered to do this.........yes?

Clive,

That is correct, yes. It's something that The Sporting Bears introduced last year to try and cover all eventualities.

Hi Clive

a letter or email just saying they are aware will suffice. It was brought in by the team earlier this year. I am afriad that without some form of written acknowledgement you will not be allowed to Dream Ride.

Sorry to hear that Don, hope it is nothing too serious? Many thanks for your support and of course an open invite to you, family and friends if you would like to come and enjoy the day. If not hope you will bear us mind for next year.

A follow up and some assistance for people doing Dream Rides and having issues with insurance:

As you know the club has said that all drivers must provide written evidence from their insurance broker or company that they are covered for Dream Rides. A number of drivers have come back saying that although they have verbal confirmation the broker has said they will not provide written confirmation. Under these circumstances the Club will also accept evidence that the Driver has written back to the insurance broker/company confirming the conversation eg

"To xyz company

Re Dream Rides Insurance Cover - [insert car details]
Motor Policy Number - [insert policy details]
This is to confirm my conversation with [name of person] at [insert time] on [insert date] where it was confirmed that the above insurance policy would provide cover for me to take part in Dream Rides events as organised by the Sporting Bears Motor Club.

If you are not in agreement with this please reply within 48 hours"

No, just some over-running work. Brendan at Raceproved would prefer to hang on to the car to make sure it's perfect before coming out, rather than sending something worse than perfect out of the door. To give you an idea...

I'll be first in line for next year, even if I can't make it down this year!

I just wanted to check that my letter re Dream Rides will suffice, I had all sorts of issues with my insurer before they finally understood what was involved and confirmed I'm ok to proceed, had to make a complaint with them to get it sorted. My letter states the following, along with all sorts of scene setting and apologies, the important bits read as follows....

"However, upon further investigation and in view of the fact you have confirmed it is held on public roads, not fenced off track, you choose the route and you are the only driver of the car, our Underwriters have now agreed to allow the cover to include the charity event. I am sorry for the delay in agreeing this but as discussed they had to conisder all of the elements before accepting any potential risks".

If you can let me know whether that is ok, I'd be grateful. I'm also planning to sign up for the morning part of the track day later on.

Cheers smile

It is amazing that we explain to insurers and there answer is always NO first, then you explain the same detail and they start to listen and then finally you get to a YES, so long as on the public roads, etc....well yes, we explained all that in the beginning.....but I hear that the OFT has just referred the entire motor insurance market....see you on the day!

Just an update from me and The Admiral....thanks to Max it has all been sorted, and they will send me an email this evening (allegedly)! They did make the point that the passenger is still NOT covered for personal injury etc. that comes from the clubs public liability she said, but like someone said previously it is the same if you get in your mates car to go to the shops!

Also got track day insurance done through MORIS, for a bargain £165 full value cover, sweet!

Look forward to meeting you all on Monday driving
