Hi All,

I am driving through europe for three weeks and have left it too late to have the required vignettes and german emission sticker delivered.

Where can I buy the vignettes? I think I'm right in saying that they are available at petrol stations next to the border. However, Im not sure where to buy the German emissions stickers.

On my few trips to Germany I've failed to be able to buy an emissions sticker over there, nobody seemed to know anything about them, hotel reception staff advised me that as my car is foreign registered the police wouldn't bother me or ticket me, and didn't.

Oh that's interesting. I'm hiring a car in Belgium as that's where the trip starts. Any fines would easily come back to me via the hire company. That's strange the people you asked didn't seem to know about them.

For Austria and Switzerland you can buy vignettes at petrol stations. I've never bothered with the German emissions sticker. Remind them about VAG if they stop you.

Yeh i think ill be ok getting the vignettes at the petrol stations which I will of course be visiting anyway. You are definitely supposed to have a german emissions sticker regardless of where the car is registered. It seems really awkward to get one as you need go to a garage or council building. To book in advance you need to have the vehicle docs which i don't know as I haven't picked up the car yet. The car will be parked at a hotel the entire time before moving on so maybe its not a big risk.

I obtained a German one by visitng the local TuV test centre in Essen who checked my Audi's VIN and issued one on the spot. Here's some info, there's plenty more on-line:

Ok thanks. Looks like there is a TUV location near my hotel so I can swing by on the way.

I've never bothered with either - Austria used to be fairly hot on them but I've never had a problem

Of course i may get away without having the sticker but that's not really the point. I've driven without road tax before for a couple of days without a problem. Doesn't mean I would recommend it to people.

Which one ?

Switzerland and Austria require vignettes for some of their roads and Germany requires an emissions sticker for a lot but not

all cities.

I've got a german umweltplakette on my car but I'm going through Austria this time, I understand I need to get a Vignette for the motorway, Do I also need to get an "emissions sticker" now or is that only for HGV? will be travelling the A12 near Innsbruck.

Unless there's a new law ,it's just a vignette for Austria, for a car.
