I see my BDC sprint chum John Scanlon has entered his Turbo RT once again. Classic Cars magazine had a great shot of this car burning rubber from the start a few years back, most unseemly

I was going to join in too and looked into it, but as has been said, too many hoops to jump through, not just joining the club for a minimum period either. John was already in, but for a fresh outsider to get in, with a near identical car, what a ball ache.

So now we're back on topic, is anyone meeting up for this? I'm planning on heading over from Easstbourne. Brighton isn't great for parking at the best of times so any suggestions?

As you say parkings a bit of a mare in Brighton and the traffic wardens are certainly out in force catching people parking where they deem they shouldn't. I normally park about about a 10min walk from Mediera drive (kemp town area) otherwaise you have to get there very early to get a space any closer.

Also word of warning, the boys in blue also like to cash in on this event and on the way home expect them to be sitting on the A23 just after the Brighton gates with a speed gun catching people on their way home. nono Been the same every year rolleyes

There is free Parking in the Marina which is at the far end of the course.

As for getting to do the Speed Trials you need to
a) Join the BHMC which costs about £10.
b) MSA license. If going in the Handicap then a non race B which costs £40 and you don't need any experience or signatures, only a medical cert from your GP if you are over 40. If you want to do any other class than the handicap then you'll need a better license, plus your car will be subject to different scrutineering rules.
c) When you get your application form for the speed trials through, you need to return it quickly as it's first come first served. It costs £80.
d) On the day you will need proper fireproof overalls (nomex or proban) and also a helmet approved for racing.

Overall, if you don't mind being in the handicap event, it's actually quite easy to enter.

Actually the Vitesse is broken so I will be in a silver Fiat X1/9. Still Car number 35 though.

Yep, got all that too.

Hmm, it seemd a whole lot more difficult than that the last time. Might look into it early and try again next year.

Thanks.

Looking forward to the pics.

We enter it every year in the handicap class, im not entirely sure what you're all struggling with entry wise??

What I will say is that it is no where near as fast as santa pod etc... its a road 1/4, little rubber down and much slippier. Its also bumpy, which doesnt help traction. For a higher powered car, you'll find you have traction issues and run about a second or more down on what you would expect to at Santa pod.

Its good fun though

I too think the F40 an awesome piece of kit but it always surprises me that, Bob Horams example at least, is not quicker over the distance. I know the road surface is far from ideal but a pal of mine ran a turbo charged Rover V8 powered Morris Minor there some years ago and did a near identical time to that attained at Santa Pod which would appear to dispel this theory to some extent.

There was a bloke selling a pit ticket for a fiver by the main gate so I bought that and wandered in, plus said my mate was with me so we both got in on one ticket, that meant you could walk up to the start line with the rest of the spectators, then my long arms meant I could photo over peoples heads.
Best bit was selling the ticket on the way out so it only cost a tank of petrol for our bikes for the whole day out

ITs not just us or the F40 that have problems there, its pretty much everyone. Look at the F50's runs, it should be doing high 11's... it does high 12's, theres also a Tuscan racer running 500bhp/500lbft doing 12.5's, this would be mid 11 territory elsewhere. Hell the Skylines run sub 10 seconds at santa pod and from what I could see, it didnt dip under the 11's.

Unless the car running is tractable enough to handle pretty much all of its power (so lower powered cars generally) the 1/4 times suffer. We've only been going for three years, so perhaps it was better before, but from chats with fellow competitors the general feeling is that its alot slower there.

My one and only photo from the Speed Trials, was too busy marshalling and competing to take any photos! This one is my practice run taken by the official photographer.
