Top driving event has places

Head for Jordan for a fab outing

One of the world's great motoring events will be run for the third time in May 2007. Only a few places remain on the entry list for The Jewel That Is Jordan III, a prestigious five-star motoring event visiting the most spectacular places in Jordan.

The event is open to all interesting, unusual or historic motor cars.

Participants can expect exquisite venues and fantastic hospitality. The route visits Aqaba, Wadi Rum, Petra, the Kings Highway and the Dead Sea, to name but a few. Participants will stay in arguably the world's most exclusive hotel, where you can expect first class service at all times - 14 days of pure exhilarating luxury.

The Lord Montagu of Beaulieu is the British patron of the event, and will attend with one of the great cars from the National Motor Museum.

This event is by invitation only and has only a few more invitations available. Entries are subject to acceptance by the organisers. Preference will be given to cars regarded as rare, or which have an interesting history.

The entry fee is an eye-watering £9,460, which is all inclusive for the car and two passengers (including car shipment). Additional passengers may be invited for an extra cost of £3,750 per person.

The Jewel That Is Jordan III takes place under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Rania Al-Abdullah and is organised by Jonathon E Lyons in association with The Royal Automobile Club Classic Car Committee.

An explanation of this sentence would be helpful. Did they print too many?

With that entry fee in mind, I'm glad I'm not invited!

It is British Mesopotamia, after all. Well nearly...

I'm quite keen on going. I'll get the cortina out of winter storage and dust off the tux. Now all I need is a few sponsors. Ted?

My (then) new wife and I did this event in 2005 for our honeymoon and had a fantastic time. We had our MKIV Cobra shipped out to Aquaba and had a wonderful two weeks along with 50+ other cars and 100 petrolheads. The Jordanian people were really welcoming and friendly. Even the police were great providing "high speed" escorts eg clearing the motorway at 100mph and then shouting over their pa speaker go! go! go!. Overtaking three police cars with their lights and sirens on at over 120mph while the BiB were smiling, waving and shouting encouragement is something I will remember for a long time. The organisers went to great lengths to look after us and our cars. We and the cars had protection and support 24/7, the group even had mechanics, low loaders and our own petrol tanker following us ( you don't want to know how cheap the petrol was).
If you get the chance to go, I can recommend it.
