1/4 Mile Times for Tivvers ?
Discussion
Ah yes ...
Top Fuel cars are now running sub 5 sec times and posting terminal speeds of 300mph+. The racing at the 'fest was pretty tame, especially compared to Top Fuel cars. Believe me, witnessing a Top Fuel posting a 5 sec 1/4 mile is an awe inspiring thing, and one you will not forget in a hurry!
European Finals are Sept 5/7. Check out www.santapod.com.
Oh, one last thing. At the 'Pod you can (if you are stupid ) stand in the "shed" directly behind the strip when the jet car goes off. Think about it!

I had never seen anything like it and now know why it was called Vanishing Point! This car, banned from running in the States because it was too fast, ran several mid 4 second runs at Santa Pod in the late 70's ,in July 1979 ran the first 300 mph run (4.2 at 307.6) and in 1982 the quickest ever time of 3.81 seconds wow!

I've the seen the jet car run about 6 times, sundays was the slowest run I've seen
I had a quick look at the jet car when it was parked up with the bodywork up, and that one had a much smaller engine than the other's I've seen - It sat behind the driver, the last one i saw had the engine all the way down the car, with the driver sat to one side of it, and the fuel tank on the other.
the Fireforce team have run 2 cars in the past, though since 2001 I've only ever seen the one car, a couple of weeks ago at Avon it ran 270mph and sounded like the engine was cut before the finish line, either way must be frightening scary.
I like the way the crew cooly just stand beside it as it takes off, don't think I'd want to be in there position

Diddnt a US top fuel (ie pistons not jets)car break the 300 mph barrier a few yrs ago?
Edited to add-
aha looks like 300+ mph is not unusual now.

Just posted in another thread, but what the hell....
Some videos of Fireforce 2 in action :-

It's officially the fastest jet FC outside the States.
Lucky enough to see the late, great Sammy Miller in Vanishing Point in the 80s, and christ that thing was awesome. Still holds the absolute 1/4 mile world record at 3.55/386mph, and at one point was SERIOUSLY talking about cracking 400mph! Very much doubt anyone will ever get close to that record. There's a French guy called Eric Teboul running a 5 second rocket BIKE now....madness.
Nice video of Micke Kagerad running a 5.0
http://drag.fawcus.com/feel-the-noise/micke_kagered.wmv
And finally, Barry Sheavills having a "spot of bother" at nigh on 300mph. He was ok by the way.

Echoing what has already been said - get yourselves down to Santa Pod for the Euro Finals - it has to be seen (and heard!) to be believed.

Sammy Millers world record time of 3.58 secs at 386 mph set way back in the early 80's is almost unbelievable. From a standing start even the Thrust car mentioned above couldn't match this.
More impressive than the 1/4 mile record is his 1/8 mile record. This stands at 1.60 secs at 319 mph

The engine is not all that powerfull. I stood about 50m behind something about 50 times bigger yesterday and was just a little blown around. The temptation to do a 'Marcel Marceau' is almost unbearable.
But standing behind the 'afterburner' would be silly

The Fireforce crew ran both cars at last year's Bugjam.
Sammy Miller had Vanishing Point running at Santa Pod last Easter, but was nowhere near as fast as he used to be apparently due to fuel restrictions. I believe he crashed it into the field as well. He was apparently planning to build another car when he died last year. There is footage of one of his quick runs here: www.ukdrn.co.uk/mc/mc.htm
