agreed, the first time I went we did some "racing" using the whole circuit. I had to get a respray afterwards which is why I always insist that we keep a nice gap on "our" days out. It doesnt ruin the fun & means you dont go home crying!

Also I did get the impression that there was less grit than in the past, so it might be that the owners have tried to improve things as they were getting a bit of a reputation for a gritty track.

Yes - it's because the Noble's had "hoovered" it all up and spat it out

On the first run there was a distinct "cloud" of dust coming out of the back of anything with a flat bottom and diffuser at the rear - but it stopped by the end of the day.

I still don't think I would do a "normal" track day there....

First of all -

GOD BLESS CRAIG W!!!

Gent, scholar and all round good egg - literally the star of the show.

My most profound plaudits, Squire. The best event I could possibly imagine really did surpass an already unfeasible standard.

(Please also convey appreciation to Marco the chef: his rat au vin burger souffle was beyond divinity...)

Indeed, on a catering theme, I would further extend grateful acknowledgements to mein hosts, Lord & Lady Thomas, for their generous provision of hearty pre-dawn refreshments and guidance of a motley crew to the hallowed place thereafter.

And on behalf of Mr Thompson, aka The Black Ultimaic, apologies to the residents of Daventry and the surrounding region: it was NOT an impromptu RAF training session going horribly wrong!

To Brunters itself and as ever, the ensemble represented quite the choicest array of man and machine: what an exceptional mix of track work, uber hoofism, mini-motorshow and quality social intercourse.

My only dissappointment was not sampling all the automotive wares - time is always against us - in particular the T350 and the Tuscan, both of which escaped my amorous advances unscathed (although my stint merely sitting in and revving the Tam tin-top was a delicious reacquaintance with the very best cockpits in the business, the very best solvent abuse this side of Salford's less salubrious quarters and even stationery, an engine note more spine tingled than one recovering from an Ian Gillan scream at several thousand decibels when paralytic beside one of Marshall's finer stacks.) Praise be.

Tony's Diablo was a true creature of darkness, of course but I was thrilled at how our resident beast master had honed his craft: through the curves the evil one locked on to smaller fish that previously might have implied pendulous messology - but not a bit of it! Well done, Tony: a simply outrageous mechanical cacophony and now the sheer ability of that monumental chassis grappled with and seemingly conquered...awe is the abiding state of memory. Hail to thee.

Of Domsteric delight, was my foray with Paul of the Clubsport division: a 993RS? No - I swear - I was clamped firmly in place alongside Mr. D Bell and as I closed my eyes, it was undoubtedly Car 956.

Cheers Paul - you're a Ring Bearer and no mistake - what a car, what a noise and such balletic poise. Pedigree? Let's just say you own a 9 times Crufts champ Louis XIV poodle and I for one was tempted by unspeakable bestiality. A killing machine. Love it, love it, LOVE IT!!! (And many thanks for the help with Operation Blade Removal!)

The Ultima? What can I possibly say that hasn't been dribbled forth before? I can but echo the sentiments of the venerable Sage of Scuderia, Manu with his analysis: "visceral." I yield to it's extremity, it's purity of purpose. Unworthy? You bet. If this was a football hooligan, it would be the multiple Nazi scar tissued pyschotic murderer frontman of Combat 18's Chelsea Headhunter special incursion squad.

Never has a car made me feel more inclined to deliver a Julian Clarey impersonation. I possess simply insufficient male testosterone to contemplate merely LOOKING at that thing. Guy, you must have spiked mace balls for testicolata. I am simply scared of this vehicle. All hail the Warlord B-Satin: for he is Lucifer's envoy and he is here for your soul...

Messrs Carter & Viant - the PH photographer of the year? And generous custodian of Maranello's most indecently rosonant flat plane block, respectively: Steve, lovely to meet you and keep those incredible photos coming - stunning.

Richard, many thanks for the ride and reminding me why one day, somehow, a prancing horse must enter the fold as an automotive rite of passage. I'm really not sure there is a finer sound track on the planet.

And the Malthusian postulate incarnate aussi: The DJ Plotlothian, whose blast 'au targa' was a fitting testimony to the varcity of the fundamental principles of the classic British muscle car - like me, Sir Matt - a little surprised by it's ability whence pressing on? Singularly wonderful Chimeritude.

The evergreen mentor of race going mentors par excellence himself, the inimtable and beneficent Earl Jeremiah of Copthorne, amazed the throng with a display of frankly unfeasible shooting brake stylee vulcanised pyromania when according to the laws of particle physics, he, the three stooges thereabout and Misty, the pie-eyed beagle in the back should have been atomised at the foot of a Hercules transporter plane's undercarriage and yet lo! We prevailed! And verily did spondoolicate forth like a mentalist banshee wailer with aggressive haemorrhoids whilst piranha-baiting not with bloody fish heads but instead, one's very own arse...a mesmerising display of quite outrageous proportions.

Hail to thee, Jezmondo, consider your drinks barely mixed. We are but orc droppings.

Adamt - a charming young Squire and with such modesty capping an amazing breadth of clearly stupendous talent - an absolute pleasure to hail you thus. That a fabulously 'helmed' BMW compact was one of the finest tootles of the day is a tribute to the ability on tap.

I'm sure I'm not alone in welcoming you to the Bruntershclorn Gruppen Stag. (Just bring one of 'the other cars' next time, there's a good chap! )

The Nobles continued to harry amidships and Von Joustawitz has one venerable new recruit in the form of Dan whose spanking 3R set more than a few internal juices flowing with all the control of an octogenarian at bath time: there is always a twinkle in the eye of a Noble pilot and the reasons are well documented! Hail to thee, also, gents and thanks as ever, Dan, in making me reconsider the significance of the film Tron insofar as lateral Gs are concerned.

Finally, to the Kaiser himself: no VMax would be complete without recourse to the Archduke himself and this is no exception. Although still the pace setter, I must thank the Overlord for his invaluable advice to this particular whipper snapper viz a vis entry speeds: the debate rages as to the import of this but I'm sure the 2nd-3rd 'snap out' as the apex is breached was critical and this technique transformed my attack.

My the Gods grant you the grace to continue your prosecution of the war. Just keep the sun to your back...

This event can hardly come again soon enough: hopefully a GT2 clutch conversion, sound proof removal and a decent dose of bucketitus will narrow the margins further. If I survive the winter, let spring's sweet blossom herald Round IV...

God save Albion.

As always DeR, a masterpiece of a post event summary.

The turn in technique allows for more sideways drifting/g force etc so is more fun for driver and passenger. Mart1n (also of X50 fame) raised an interesting point though in that with a full on attack through the corner we both only managed another 3 mph on our top speed from a 20mph rolling start on the straight. Probably a testament to the cars abilities that the distance it takes to increase speed from 20 to 100mph in my instance is roughly the same distance needed to raise speed from 176 to 179 mph.

regards

Quite so, mein Kaiser although what deficit think you that we suffered c/o the old head wind?

10 mph?

I know by the second braking post the speedo was reading 190/191 which is where I was at Brunters II and that translated into 183 - so even allowing for speedo error just how significant was the gust?

Also, walking over the fields (a pastime strongly recommended for feudal underlings, btw), I was surprised by the apparent incline faced by the cars.

Adamt reminded me that their RUF had clocked 190 by the 1 mile mark...

(And where the hell were the GT2s?)

Over...

Nice write up of a great day DeR , I have to say that my P ride with you in Hermann was definitely one of the highlights of my day, as a perspective to my own car and to experience how she fairs on a dawn raid of the northern countryside.

Tks for the kind words ref the RS,,,,for extra noise look at the airbox and induction system,,not sure how this affects Turbos' but Tech 9 will know...

ref insulation,,,my clip on/off engine bay soundproofing was firmly in place to quiten things down...True.....

Top stuff ben, you actually got one of the red maserati in full effect cheers!

Funny how I came equipped with a camera ready to snap everything, but completely forgot about taking snaps once the hooning began!

Oh well, roll on VMAX IV, there has got to be a way to liberate a bit more speed (throwing out the passengers and the suitcase in the boot next time!!)

Hope to see you all down at V/W in a week or so

P.S. Rich, seeing the 360 arrive on my tail on the country roads outside brunters really set things up for the day, that is one superb motor, just a few more $$$'s.

£1634.90 + VAT inc fitting (actually for a GT2 job).

Still, it's my only expense bar servicing, batteries and super-U since purchase over 3 years ago.

How about yourself, kind Sir?

Sorry........ I didn't make it up there with the GT2, I was at Santa Pod watching some friends in Skylines go drag racing. I had intended to leave in the afternoon to go to Brunters, but the drag-racing got so competitive that I never ended up leaving.

This was due to the fact that three of my old Skyline GTRs were there and the drag R32 GTR I co-owned ran for the first time and by the end of the day had set a new UK drag record for Jap cars when it did 10.1 secs at 155mph on road tyres (with a bad start). (At the half-track ie 200 yards it had reached 120mph in 6 seconds).

Sounds like the head-wind at Brunters played havoc with speeds, that is always a concern there.

As for the incline, in common with most airstrips it is uphill from both ends to the centre, so any acceleration or speed testing may be positively or negatively influenced by the placing of start/finish.
