The number of people reporting micro-cracked disks would seem to confirm something that I had read elsewhere - that grooved disks are the way to go rather than cross drilling for both performance and longevity.

Had this problem on my upgraded discs for the Chimaera, supplied by indirectly by Hi-spec apparently, after spending 20 odd laps out on the circuit in one session! they replaced them FOC which I thought was good of them, I guess they were only 9 months old tho, wont be doing that many laps in one go again!

Oh yeh, and these were definately past their sell by date after Sunday

heavy car the M5, there was a good 5-6mm on them before I left!

Had a a look at the bm M3 discs and they are fine. Front pads (mintex) ar ok with plenty of life but the old rears need changing. Also, as usual the brake fluid (castrol srf) needs bleeding after its day of heavy use.

Front discs now have cracks.

Bollox, drove the car today for the first time in 7 days and these cracks are now 6mm in places. Think I may spectate at the next event.

DAZ

Hmm, may go and buy a drill and one of those car jack on wheels thingies.

I just spent an hour or so going round my disks with a drill and appropriate size bit, clearing the holes. I even managed to avoid drilling any extra ones!

I took the car for a bit of a test drive afterwards and I'm probably imagining it, but I could swear the brakes immediately felt better for it. Is this possible or is it psychological?

Still got the micro-cracks though. How serious are these? I'm still driving the car and keeping an eye on them - they don't seem to be getting any worse. My assumption is the disks are not going to disintegrate and I'll get them replaced in due course.

They won't disintegrate, cracks just get longer. I had them up and over the edge of the disc at Donington last year before replacing them, no degredation in braking and, more importantly, no disintegration, despite what all the cynics said!!

Cheers Melv, much encouraged by that! Especially since Maranello want £500+ VAT fitted for new front disks, quite happy to put it off for a bit.

I rather think not.

Some people think the King fell on the field of battle but it's amazing how things can be so easily misconstrued in the fog of war.

Brake dust in the cross drilled holes only prevent air flow through the holes, and during serious track day work will cause serious problems, for everday normal driving you wont really feel any difference

The cracks on the other hand, we had massive ones for a long time and the brakes were fine, but there does come a point when you have to change them- and 6mm was aboout the same as when we changed them

all the best

Spent a gentle hour this morning swapping tyres after Oulton Park and drilling out the brake dust left from Brunters and Oulton. No great piles of debris, but some very, very, very small cracks on NS disc -no major probs.

Dust seemed worse on the inner holes than the outers?
