How about a Rover V8 in a mini, still FWD of course...

That was the one I was refering to in my post, hence why I think it should be possible to drop a RV8 in an Escort using a similar technique.

Sorry Eliot should have read your post more thoroughly.

Think the mini is quite aptly described as a V8 deathtrap... I will admit to being quite taken with the V8 Focus kits you can get though. Complete bolt in replacement for the standard engine..very neat. Probably the ulimate sleeper if you could plonk this in a 1.6 Pop Plus with an uprated (i.e. quieter) exhaust and a "child on board" sticker in the back.

just pop a hemi 426 in it and you will be laughing! they can take upto 1200bhp on the standard block (obv different internals and a blower glued on)

yanks make the most tuneable engines in the world so it would make sence to use an american unit

seen some website advertised in pratical Performance (there SD1 is ace) that will sell you a new subframe to let your mini run true RWD, and still be front engined!

so stick on of thoes in and then use a Cossy engine. should be pretty funny!

or for thoes weight freeks, stick a turboed Busa eninge in the front and drive the rear wheels!

will try and get some more info on it!

thanks Chris.

I am currently fitting a Duratec V6 into my Mk 1 Fiesta, it fits in the engine bay but I may have to do some work aroung the gearbox/inner wing, which I have already done once for a 5 speed RS Turbo box conversion on the X-flow engine which is currently fitted. The engine mounts are all in roughly the same place and it should look quite neat and tidy. Using the standard ECU and engine loom with minor mods. Intend on using tubular manifolds with 1 silencer, TVR style with twin outlets.

but is that car 4 metres long, becoz true small hatchbacks like the fiesta are no longer.

otherwise, going by the comments above, it seems a V8 is the maximum feasible.

tho i wonder about now...
1. VR10
2. VR12
3. boxer 8cyl
4. flat 8cyl
5. inline 5cyl

ps- an ya cant put them in the back as thats cheating !

Slightly off thread, but this reminds me of a story my uncle told me. In the early 70s he was a mechanic in a BMC garage. By co-incidence the V12jag engine and gearbox from one job was laying next to another job. A customer asked jokingly how they'd get that engine in the little mini pick-up, as it was longer than the car.
'Well, we'll put an oxy torch on the end and bend it round 90degrees' he said with a straight face.
'OH.....Right.....thought so' said the customer.

Back in the 70s there was at least one dragster minivan
with a 4.2 E-type Jag engine in the back.
I saw it do 175mph down the strip at Santa Pod, in about 10 secs I think.

Also a well known Morris 1000 with Rover V8 twin turbo.
Beautifully prepared street legal machine that handled too.
It did the quarter in 11.5 secs.

That is unbelievable!
Quarter Mile Time of 11.6 in a Fiat 126!!!!

Those people @ PF04 saw it run...

It's quite an entertaining little motor, especially when other people around you who have no idea what it is are laughing as the crew push it down the fire up lane! then lay down huge amounts of rubber with MASSIVE burnouts and wheelie into stage...

The saab 900 has a pretty big engine bay but you would need to make a tunnel for the prop and box unless you fitted a FWD LS1.

Biggest I've seen is a 500 inch Caddy V8 lump in a Chevette... only suitable for straight lines!
