Unfortunately in my case, the (plastic) cam cover had gone brittle and was breaking up rapidly.

No amount of silicon sealant could fix it.

Due to the lack of availability of a good used one, I ended up paying £300+ for a brand new one.

And a short while after, the oil filter housing 'o' ring failed too.

I have done a thread on my car, anyone looking to buy an E39 BMW 5 series would (should!) be put off by this..
Lovely, cracking thread! Just had a look and it looks very like a cam cover gasket, has been a bit of oil which I put down to my sloppy refilling of oil but fairly sure it isn't that, certainly there is loads of oil on the under tray.

Heres to it just being the gasket.

Hello people,

Just joined up to follow up on this post. (Thanks Google.)

My car is a 2014, 5 door Renault Clio 16v (woohoo).

Two weeks ago I noticed these exact symptoms. The car is fine day to day but upon arriving at my parent's house (they have a long steep drive way) we noticed a horrible smell of burning plastic.

Ninety nine times out of one hundred this smell is because their neighbours are burning their rubbish, but a week later we got the same smell and also saw wisps of blue/grey smoke creeping out of the bonnet on the driver's side.

From what I've been reading it seems likely there is a small, cam cover oil leek that is dripping onto the exhaust?

Certainly there is no visible drop of oil level on the dip stick so any oil loss must be quite small.

Also it only occured after a short (30 metre) drive up the drive to my parents house.

I've owned an older version of this car which bled/leaked oil on to the floor when parked but there was never any burning plastic smell like this.

I'm hoping to get the car onto lift next week so we can have a good poke around.
