Engine restoration to running state
Discussion
Ok, whilst there is no magic wand, what would be the best way to restore a engine, that has laid idle for some years (apart from periodic turning over to get oil moved about) back to running condition?
As it's fitted with high lift cam I am toying with 're doing lobes lifters etc with something like Torco MPZ assembly grease, seafoam in the cylinders initially before fitting plugs for running.
Would there be any point in a running in oil for initial runs (say up to operating temperature) followed by a change of oil and filter (or two) before final fill with a ester based oil for the longer term .
Any ideas or hints appreciated.

If it's been stored somewhere damp or humid you might want to drain and replace the oil in case any condensation has built up in the sump. For a really manky old engine I might turn it over by hand first to make sure the rings haven't corroded to the bores. Check the condition of the external fuel lines too. Apart from those checks I'd just check oil and coolant levels, drain and replace petrol, check the battery is healthy, and start it. You are quite likely to have problems with dry seals and gaskets, but you'll discover those soon enough.
