Need to get the cambelt and water pump replaced on the wife's polo - due to age not mileage.

Will be the second replacement.

Same indy dealer we've always taken it to (Lion Garage in Nottingham) has quoted £430...seems way too steep to me! It's a 2006 1.4 polo.

I'm sure we've paid less last time, probably between £300-£350.

What do you think is a reasonable amount to pay - unless they are trying to hike their prices up. The old manager I knew quite well left and it now has new management.

Go and ask in a Marque specific forum, with the full details.

You will get all every answer under the sun you want in GG.

EG I think it will cost £413.27....

Or maybe call around... (Bit of a left-field answer there, I know)

Had daughter's Golf, with basic (not TSi) 1.4 petrol engine, done at a busy local indie 2yrs ago and they quoted £280 +VAT. I just pulled the invoice out and added up the cambelt kit (VW kit, with tensioners), water pump, anti-freeze and 2hrs labour and it came to £259 before VAT.

Our local dealer (Inchcape, Chester) used to advertise cambelts only for £299, with water pump for £349. They chased several times to do the job but were quoting £449 and wouldn't budge. When I told them I'd had it done somewhere else they said they would have matched the price. I wouldn't use them if they did it free though.

ETA: I notice it's £449 for cambelt only and £499 with water-pump on VW's website. Maybe what's going on here is the same as I've noticed with my Merc - as Mercedes have jacked up prices the indies seem to have raised theirs too.

I just got spanked for 500 notes on a decidedly average and common engine.

Next time will be leasing or getting a chain driven unit.

2 hours to do all that ? Even on an easy car that's fast....even more so with water pump given it can take an easy 20 mins or so to warm everything up and check for leaks after.

Just buy (or lease) a BMW (but not one with the N47 diesel engine) as they use cam-chains!

No, I'm well aware ofthat - but chains don't just snap do they! laugh

And some are better than others - 1.2 Corsa or 2.2 Astra chains don't live too long, but my E91 BMW is at 133K miles and still going strong. blah

I’ve just done my cambelt and water pump kit for my 1.4L polo 2006. I bought a Gates cambelt and water pump kit for £90. Garage quoted me £389. So thought I’d give it a go as I’ve done pretty much everything on my car so I knew it inside out.

Thanks all - and sorry I didn't reply

In the end I think I paid around £360 as some extra work needed doing too so this seemed reasonable.

Cheers
