My first guess would be a slight leak in a fuel line somewhere. It's starting on what's in the injectors, and then pulling air. Needs to go to a decent garage to confirm this, as diesel fuel systems are not to be messed with unless you know 100% what you are doing. The pressure in certain points of the system is high enough for escaping fuel to pierce your skin.
Awww thank you for the reply i am hoping to get it into a garage this week for someone to have a look as once its started it will run all day stopping and starting its when its left overnight the problem comes about or if its been sat for a full day i have the problem but when doing the daily runs and its left for a hour or 2 it will start fine
I had a leaky primer bulb (not sure if your Pug has the same engine design) so if you squeezed it then air would be visible in the clear plastic tubing. A slight leak letting in air would, I think, give you similar issues when the cars been left.
However, also had to replace a lazy starter motor (known issue on mine - a 2003 2.0 lump) so that's two potential avenues.
Disclaimer - I'm NOT mechanically minded! Sure others on here will have more nuanced suggestions shortly...

Had pretty much identical issue with my Mercedes Sprinter. After standing overnight it would start but then die after 20/30 seconds. Lots of cranking would restart & be fine for the rest of the day with a repeat performance the following morning.
On that there is a small plastic valve which fits on top of the fuel filter & had developed a hairline crack. No fuel leakage but allowed air in & the fuel in the line to drain back to the tank.

I've got a Peugeot 206 1.4HDI which does much the same. If its parked pointing downhill, its fine. Uphill or left park on the level for a few days, forget it, it will need priming. I've read that the in-tank pumps wear out too, so if you find its worse when the fuel level is low, you might want to change it. The 206 was also prone to a return fuel pipe chafing on the engine, making a minute pinhole which would let air in.
There is also a pressure control valve which is meant to maintain pressure in the fuel system. If the seal goes it lets the fuel decay, which will have to be built up by the injection pump each ime you try to start the engine. Look up part number 0928400627.
