Cost of Charging Electric Car
Discussion
I'm considering buying a hybrid car which, according to the manufacturer's website, has a 13 Kwh battery. The car can run for up to 45 miles in full electric mode.
I think I pay for electricity at around 3.182 pence per Kwh.
Does that mean to charge the battery fully, and hopefully to get up to 45 miles range, I would spend 3.182 x 13, or 41.3 pence?
Obviously, it's likely that I wouldn't get 45 miles in one charge, but if I was getting 30 miles that would still be quite good economy at just under 1.5 pence per mile.
Or am I missing something?

13 kWh should certainly get you about 45 miles in mixed driving if you don't accelerate too hard. On a steady cruise probably a bit further. There will probably not be a 100% efficent charging rate so it will likely take a bit more than 13 kWh from the mains to recharge the battery but if we say 15 kWh at 18p per kWh inc VAT that's £2.70 or 6p a mile. My Kia diesel does about 45/50 mpg in mixed driving and central heating oil is 54p a litre. That's about £2.20 to £2.45 for the same trip

That will be your gas rate. Electricity is around 17p/kWh I'm afraid. 16 on a good day. Even the new Scottish Power Electric Car tarrif only gives around 8p for 5 hours at night.
I’m paying 11.5p per KWh. The car does 4 miles a Kw. So less than 3p a mile (plus the car of course)
