The other half has had me change the fan resistor, all I can say, thats a job i don't want to be doing again. However, in my lack of knowledge trying to put the new one in a broke a piece off the black plastic so one can see the circuit board inside.

I'm guessing these things get rather hot when at full power, would this be a fire risk, as it would only be on full for a few minutes at a time when demisting, then on half speed for the rest of the time. I'm worried dust would build up over time and catch fire. However, i don't really want to be forking out another £130 for another one.

Put a bit of electrical tape over it. It won't get that hot, but peace of mind is priceless.

Use some black Milliput permanent solution and cures rock hard as it’s a resin. Job done!
