Detecting a limited slip diff in a Seven

I tend to hear different procedures. Some keep telling the car needs to be in gear and some are sure it needs to be in neutral.

If it is in gear, wouldnt I just measure the torque required to turn the pistons in the engine?

The only procedure to confirm is opening the case and looking at it.

I dissasembled the differential and opened it. As I assumed it was an open differential
