For increased mpg I assume you would like to save money on the running of your car. A good start would be to invest that £100 in fuel and I would bet my own mother, that you will get more miles for your money, than if you spent it on an induction kit.
However a K&N will most definately make you look like and sound like a big man in McDonalds car park and I was a happy owner of a k&N on my Nova GTE.

Are you after improved economy, or power? If you're after economy, induction mods are a waste of time. If you're after power then you need somebody familiar with that engine to tell you whether there are any easy mods, you might find there is a bhp to be had here and there by removing flashing and generally cleaning up the intake side. I wouldn't expect to get major gains on a small engine without major changes (cam/head, for example). If the engine is basically sound and you're thinking about major work just to raise the power, it would probably be more sensible to trade up to a faster car. It would almost certainly be cheaper, more reliable and easier to insure.

As for the 'if they're that good why don't manufacturers fit them as standard' question - COST!
youre wrong - its not just the cost... most people dont like the sport filter sonud, though *all* people on this forum do

If he purchased a kit that included water injection he could cut down on fuel costs in the order of approx 25% while increasing power more significantly than the 2bhp mentioned earlier. If he does a lot of miles a port polish could make the car a little more efficient.

I think you would only expect to see economy gains if you also ran the engine leaner. And it would take some fairly complex modifications to a conventional closed loop lambda 1 setup to allow that?
I still don't see how any induction system upgrades or port polishing is going to make any difference to economy. Under cruise conditions the restriction of the intake system would seem to be irrelevant.
