Following on from this, does anyone know if any of the lesser (read cheaper) makes have something similar to the Snap On sockets that supposedly grip the flats of a nut rather than the points? My paranoia is always rounding off a bolt/nut - think this (if it works) sounds like a good way of guarding against that.

Most brands do sockets like that. Sealey's are "wall drive" as far as I know...

I have some sockets from an old Richmond set which did this. Must be about 15 years old now....

Halfords Pro are also supposed to grip the flats (and I haven't had many probs with rounding off nuts...

Cheers guys. I actually popped into Halfords today to pick up a socket big enough for a ball joint and found that the one I got (from the pro range) seems to drive on the flats. Appears to just be a bit loose fitting around the points to achieve this. Still, if it stops it rounding off... Thanks again.
