Good afternoon.

I have a Corsa D 1.7 CDTi and it has acquired an Intermittent tick. Sometimes it can be quite loud and other times it's only the normal diesel tick. Its there when it's cold or at operating temp. It drives fine, does sometimes have a problem starting but that happened when I replaced the fuel pump so I'm putting that down to that. Any suggestions would be brilliant as I've tried loads and can't seem to figure it out. Had enough of chucking money at it now.

Thanks

Try a run through with an injector cleaner, available from many car places. Also try a tank full of BP ultimate. Certainly try those before anything is replaced.

I've always ran the car on BP Ultimate, I tried Shell V-Power this week to see if that'll help but no luck. Tried all sorts of fuel additives (even the cheap and nasty ones), tried a diesel purge, changed fuel filter etc. Done an oil change last and added Ceratec. I do an oil/filter change every 4k ish miles so its very well maintained. I've had no EML lights whatsoever so I'm stumped.

I did think maybe it's the lifters, piston slap or rod knock but I can't see it being them. It just sounds like it's something to do with combustion, maybe the mix isn't quite right but can't figure out why. I could be wrong

"Tick" isnt very descriptive for any chance of a remote diagnosis.

It the diesel ticking/clatter but ALOT louder. Its not overly noticeable at idle but with a little throttle or under slight load around 1300-1800 rpm the noise intensifies, then as you get into 4th going faster the noise isn't noticeable. It doesn't happen every time. There's isn't any other way to describe a ticking other than it sounds like a tick 😊

Of course there is. As in exactly when, is it rpm related, is it load related, is it temperature related. Does it sound like a single cylinder or more than one ?
Is it mechanical or combustion related ?

There is a lot more info that could be provided....including video/audio.

OK... Well I did that in my last post minus the video/audio.

One that is easy to check is a crack in the exhaust manifold. It can sound like a tick and come and go depending on the manifold temperature.

Tomorrow I'm gonna clean out the EGR valve... AGAIN so while I'm there I'll have a butchers at the manifold, it's quite hard to see as it's in a concealed place.

The ticking/clatter was really loud earlier and didn't even calm down once warm. I have noticed the MPG is slightly lower than normal, it usually sits around 42.8mpg and that's with more spirited driving than normal driving, but the last few months now I've changed to more normal driving than spirited drivng so the MPG should be higher but it's lower which is odd. Performance hasn't changed at all.

EGR cleaned and its was quite mucky, not enough to block it at all. Only cleaned it a few months ago and it was worse than expected. Checked the manifold and nothing caused any concern but then again I couldn't see much of it as its covered by the EGR cooler and piping. Thinking maybe it is the lifters as the noise is rather similiar (checked youtube for lifter noise). Did think a sticking valve but I can't see that being the case as I change the oil twice a year (about every 4k miles). Maybe try an engine flush in 5 months when I next change the oil and add some lifter additive.
