I think I know the answer but here goes anyway.

No leaks, heating and cooling OK, but I can feel a little movement on the water pump, both horizontally and laterally. It's only about 4 yrs 16000 miles old, not OEM but a reputable brand.

Is it goosed?

The PAS pump has a little lateral movement but no horizontal movement, I think it's always been like this so probably OK.

What runs around the water pump, timing belt or aux?

If in doubt, there is no doubt. Swap it out.

There shouldn't be noticeable radial play in the bearing. If there is, the seal will probably wear out faster than normal, eventually leading to a leak. Up to you whether you wait for that to happen or replace it pre-emptively.

Thanks, remarkably cheap from a marque specialist (£85 as opposed to £350 from MB)

So I'll pop one on, just a pita to fit.
