Flat Spots

Noticed on Tuesday night that my Mondeo's V6 seems to pause slightly at two points during the rev range, although the engine picks up again from those points onward.

Could the engine have a flat spot or two? How would I remedy the situation?

My old MX6 had several flat spots which BBR do a chip for. Not only did it get rid but also gave 3mpg better fuel economy!

Have you checked the plugs for signs of arcdown on the porcelain?
Very common problem on the Zetecs, although im not sure on the V6s.
Also check for air leaks on the induction path.

Didn't the MX6 use the same V6 as the Mondy?
"Flat spots" are sometimes designed in to get past noise regs/emmissions.

Could this be the "the fly by wire-backing off the throttle to flatten the torque curve concept" I've heard so much tell about, in real life action?

I think the V6 has port deactivation throttles that close off 1 of the 2 intake ports on each cylinder to improve low speed torque/part throttle performance. Check that these are working correctly and are not stuck closed or slow to open etc.
