I took the cylinder head off a 2286 Rover petrol engine on Saturday with the intention of replacing it with a tweaked cylinder head (ported, unleaded compatible valve seats and high compression ratio). I was cleaning the deposits off the piston crowns when I noticed that the pistons were a little wobbly in the bores. I took the pistons out and used one to push the top piston ring into the bore a little way below the lip that had formed. Piston ring gap in the region of 2.5mm - Rover manual specifies 0.015" to 0.020"

I haven't measured the bores but am anticipating the worst...

Should I get it:
rebored?
relinered?
replacement block?

Hmmm. If you had it relinered then youd be able to retain the current set of pistons.

Rebore might not be feasible if its been done before.

Replacement block will need new pistons.

Depends on your budget and intended use id say.
