If you are looking for a manual it would be the TREMEC/Borg Warner T-5, if auto then the AOD is the ticket.

If you want to peruse Ford transmissions here is a link:

Hi tdo, I have found them ranging in price from $800 usd on Ebay to $1200 usd from remanufacturers in the U.S. only, so far. I haven't found any in the U.K. but they must be available, I think they used that trans in the TVR Tuscan and Cerbera, although I'm sure the bell housing had a different bolt pattern for sure.

I wonder if posing this question in the Mustang forum might shed some light on where to find the T5 in the U.K.?

A UK T5 from a sierra has diferent ratios and a different spline on the first motion shaft??

Buy a new tremec for the engine £1400 ish, you can often find second hand ones, failing that a top loader from an american breakers or if you are really lucky a T10 BW these are 4 speed though but the top loader can be had cheaply.

while I remember on. the 302 has 2 sizes of flywheel and 2 types of bell housing, for a T5 you need the smaller bellhousing and flywheel.

if the engine is off an auto you need to install a spigot shaft bearing in place of the brass bush. A capri 3.0 is the same part as the mustang

if you are changing flywheels please note that youshould ensure the flywheel balance matches the front external crank damper. flywheels also had 2 different balance weights dependant on application.

if you get any of it wrong you will shake your engine to bits.

Neil.

If you seriously want to put the 302 in a Sierra - why not buy one that was done by Ford direct - the XR8. It's an import from South Africa and theres been a few for sale over the last couple of months. XR4 style body, 302 engine, US T5 box and factory quality fit. They really are quite fantastic cars - I just bought one a few weeks ago that was advertised on the classifieds for £3,800 - I know thats not cheap but if your talking half that for the engine and the gearbox alone, plus all the hassle of fitting etc. - is it worth it? Best of luck with the project which ever way you go.

it turns out the engine has a 'box, it's an auto but for 350 quid I don't care after having my ear to the ground for a shell it looks like the project is gonna come up at just under 2k that's including new suspension and breaks too.

cerbagriff would you mind helping me out when the project get under way please? i could really do with some photos of the engine mounts etc.

the only reason that car was £3800 was because it had been reshelled and the uprated rear axle and unique grill and wing spats missing.. a complete proper XR8 will fetch in the region of £6k if you can find one

302 will go in a regular sierra pretty straight forward, i would forget the auto and source a T5, you can get them new from Real Steel if you flush or find a cossie box and fit that, Real steel will sell u the parts u need or source them cheaper from the states, the cossie box has a better first gear ratio but looses the long 5th (0.68) of the US mustang T5 used in the XR8- although there are lots of T5's so the ratios can vary.
