If you use bike cyl heads, how do you get the intakes and exhausts on the 'right'sides? meaning, the intakes in the middle, and the exhausts on the outside, not the intakes on one side and the exhaust on the other

Knock up a pair of custom cams for the head you need to turn round so that they can be driven from the "wrong" end. A bit of head machining would be needed but nothing tricky.

I think I remember something about a bike engine (no idea which one) having gear driven cams with the drive in the middle, ie between cyl 2 and 3. That would be a doddle.

Or you could knock up a lay shaft to run down the middle of the V to take drive to the other end of the engine for the head you turn round.

Quicker way: I recall a bike that was featured in a mag back in the '80s that was a Norton Featherbed frmae with a Rover V8 in it...

Well...something like a Yamaha Thunderace engine has the cam-chain running down the middle of the cylinder heads, rather than the end, so that wouldn't provide too many problems, but I don't know about other choices of cylinder head.

thanks for the info. how much int./ehx. port machining would be involved if I wanted to turn the head around? and instead of having custom cams, won't the stock cams fit?

Or how about two (bike) V4's bolted together on a common crank. You'd need to make new camshafts though.

It's impossible to go into much detail until you know which head you are going to use. Get some Haynes manuals out of you local library and compare the cylinder heads of the engines you are thinking of using. Pick the one that would be the least hassle (or post pictures here for advice)

I wouldn't worry about too much about having custom cams machined - that's a doddle compared to getting your block and crank made.

Youve not heard of the HOG BOSS then, its a £100k bike with a chevy V8 as standard.
