The problem is intermittent but frequent. At first the rev counter appeared to be reading approx. double what it should and rather erratically. It was out of synch the engine revs but it frightened the life out of me at first glance yikes Now, the rev counter can shoot round past 8,000 rpm to bounce off the stop, often on start-up but also when driving. It does seem to ease as the engine warms thoroughly but can still reoccur throughout a journey. Seeing the needle in the red, even when I know there are revs to spare, is cramping my style

Garage has said that the rev counter itself is at fault. However, to repair it would mean replacing the entire dash unit at a cost of £650 cry I’d welcome any suggestions for other solutions or recommended experts who might be able to fix the problem, rather than just swap the part. (I'm in Herts, working in Northants.)

Car is a 1999 Nissan 200SX that’s done 114,000 miles. It’s got improved air filter and exhaust, and the maximum turbo boost is a little higher than standard. It’s been serviced by the book and so far it has been a reliable, faithful and entertaining everyday transport The problem, as always, is deciding when to repair and when to move on scratchchin The car’s worth about £3,500.

SE Nisstek, at Malden in Essex, knew fast Nissans inside out, but shut up shop. I’d like to know where those guys ended up.

Thanks Stevie, I had looked there, even used google to search it, but found nothing. At your prompting I've registered and that's opened up a whole world of wavey rev counters Seems dry solder is a possible cause, and if that fails the rev counter can be be replaced separately with a suitable donor.

Certainly sounds like a better plan of action than £650+ !!!!!
