1995 Jeep Cherokee 2.5 diesel, wont start in the cold.
I am going to change the glow plugs, is there anything else I should look at?

Do the glow plugs first, and while you are there check all the connections to them. If you still get a problem you need to check that you are getting the voltage to those plugs or you may have relay problems.

You can check the glow plugs are working by measuring the current draw from the battery when the coil light is on. Although you will need a hefty ammeter scratchchin

Plus I can't remember just how much current they should draw. Something like 80 Amperes I recon. Best to check with someone who does remember!

Don't know it this is common on jeep diesel: cylinder head cracked or head gasket gone. After you have done all the checks, and still issues, it could be that when cold the compression build up to start the diesel to burn is not sufficient.Glow plugs are to help, as after that the compression should take care of it to heat the air enough to start the burning process. Compression test would give you information on this, but hopefully it is not.

What about the immobilisor?

If we get a suspect diesel engine at work, ie saltwater, freezing cold etc and are not to sure if the glowplugs have failed get a hot air gun shove it in the intake for a few seconds and then crank it if it fires it's the glow plugs. Using a hot air gun has got me out of trouble many times

Thanks for all the advice, in the end it was a wire with a strange fuse, new fuse holder and we are away.
