This might seem like a stupid question, it is late? but how exactly do injector cleaners e.g. redex, STP and petrols like V-power clean an engines internals???? I understand they probably help to burn off any crud on the internals of the engine, but how? and what exactly is the "build up that reduces efficiency" in the engine????????

I days of old, cars would have had a De coke to remove carbon build up from the combustion chamber and the valves, this involved removing the head and plenty of time with wire brushes in drills, scraping the tops of pistons etc, no fun!

Fuel injector cleaners use solvents to dissolve the gum and varnish residue from petrol, also they raise the combustion temperature and reduce the carbon build up by burning it off.

Having sold and used various, the best results I have seen and experienced were using the "Wynns Power Purge" system, this is where the car is run for around 30mins on a rather unpleasant solvent, via a machine, the car felt livlier afterwards and had reduced emissions on an MOT emissions tester.

Next best thing that I have tried is again Wynns, 2 cans of thier trade only injector cleaner added to half a tank of fuel in my old Lotus made the world of difference.(yes I know it had carburettors).
throttle response was improved, as was low speed running.

The retail type products in my opinion are a little too dilute, but wont do any harm.

For ultimate injector cleaning, you cant beat the Asnu system, where the injectors are removed , new pintles and filters fitted after a thorough ultrasonic clean and flow/spray pattern test.

Cheers for that, so do the regular 95 octane petrols, shell, bp etc have the same cleaning properties as the higher octane juice??

This I dont know, however try some Wynns Injection Power 3 (IP3), It has an injector/valve cleaner, octane booster and breaks down water so it can be passed throught the filters and burned off, Saab used to endorse this stuff.

Sorry to go on about Wynns, but IMHO it does the job, I flog tools nowadays not chemicals, but still use the afore mentioned stuff myself.
