i am fitting a focus 1.8 zetec engine into my kit car but i dont need the powersteering pump and the aircon pump.
this leaves me with a slight belt problem.
the only possibility i have are
1.. to leave the aircon pump (blocking the inlet and outlet off as the actual pump is not required just the pulley) in place and use a different sized belt (this belt would have to be an exact size for the original belt tensioner to take up the slack
or
2.fit a belt tensioner to the aircon pump mounting holes as this will keep the belt run correct then the new belt size is not too critical. however i have no idea if this type of part is available

i was just wondering if anyone has come across this problem or if anyone has any idea how to solve it

thanks

Some mk3 fiestas didnt have air con or power steering but ran the 1.6 and 1.8 zetecs use the pullys tensioner and belt from on of them and you should be fine.

Use a flexible sewing tape measure to figure out the length belt you need without the A/C and P/S pumps. Have someone hold the belt tensioner 2/3rds of the way in (against the spring) while you measure. You could always buy belts sized 2 bigger and smaller as well as your measurement and when you find the one that fits perfect, return the others.

Or try what the chap who posted before me has suggested.

thanks for the very quick replies.
trooper. the air con pulley or some sort of pulley has to fitted in that spece as this allows the belt to run its corect path

neil.. that sounds like a splendid idea, i will have a look around some scrap yards for the items.. hopefully the tensioner will fit the same mounting points.

The aircon should be controlled by an electric clutch - so if there's no current going through it, it'll only be the pulley that spins (and the part of the clutch attached to it). It wouldn't draw that much power from it.

Although if you've got the aircon pump going spare, I may be tempted smile

The Mk1 Mondeos also didn't have air con, maybe easier to find than the XR2i, bear in mind the XRs only had 105 BHP compared to the Focus' 113, probably just the ECU though.

If you've not already done so check out the www.locostbuilders.co.uk site. I've had no experience of the blacktop Zetec but used the 115PS Escort Si 1.8 engines in my previous cars and these had the water pump that rotated in the correct direction. The water pump pulley had teh groves in it but I suspect that you have the one that runs on the back of the belt and is therefore smooth. Someone there should be able to advise which pump works on the blacktop.
What are you doing for alternator mount? The Westfield mount works very well although is expensive, but saves a lot of hassle. It's a mount and belt kit.

cheers for all your replies.. after searching scrap yards all day and calling to the local ford dealer i couldnt find any part that would do the job...
so i decided to make my own.. a complete pain in the ass but with a little help from the local ford breaker i think i might have finally solved the problem...
rather than write the solution again ..check it out here
