I need a live axle to take about 320 bhp with a fair bit of torque, I've been offered a genuine, low mileage Capri 280 with an LSD (standard fitment) for £350. So, will it do the biz and is the price about right ? Input please.

If you want it to take that power reliably then I'd be looking at something American, Chevy or Mopar.

The Capri axle will be marginal.

You really need a Salisbury 4HA from a Jag Mk 1 or Mk2, as fitted to numerous rally cars etc.

All the spares are available, and as they have an 8.5" crownwheel they can take your proposed engine set up no problem.

The Jag is a good axle but I would have thought that finding one these days wouldn't be that easy. A Chevy 9-inch positraction axle would do very nicely and I would guess that you'd be able to get a better choice of final drive ratios than for the Jag and would probably work out cheaper too.

If you build the Capri Atlas axle with the right bits it should be ok in my opinion, The key thing is to build it up with the colapsible spacer, once the correct preload is achieved, dismantle, measure the thickness of the spacer and replace it with a solid shim, IIRC then you torque up the pinion nut to 90 ft lbs, check that figure though. Should be good for 400 bhp with Gartrac half shafts.

cheaper way would be to go for a mustang axle as others have suggested

Thanks for the input guys, as the engine will probably be developed, and therefore produce more power in the future, i think I will look for something a little stronger than the Capri unit. So, does anyone know anything about sourcing a yank one ?

It's fixable...

These guys supply american axle assemblies for dragracing applications that produce far more power than you're quoting:-
