There isn't an electrical section so I'll put it in here!

A friend has a 3 year old Nissan Tino - an MPV version of the Almera.
They have a really annoying electrical gremlin that the local garage can't fix.

Sometimes the engine won't turn over.
Sometimes it will turn over but not start.
On the occasions when it does decide to start it runs OK, but the dash indicator repeaters don't work, even though the indicators are working OK.

No other symptoms as far as I know - they're in Somerset, I'm in Bedfordshire, so I can't exactly go and look at it!

They have been dealing with a local non-franchise garage that does all their company car maintenance. The car has been to the local Nissan dealer to get the key recoded and run a diagnostic check (which didn't show anything).
The garage claims to have 'reloomed' the car - but I can't believe they've actually replaced the loom.

Anyone got any ideas?

intermittent faults are always tricky.
I dont know the engine TBH - but this may be 2 problems confusing the issue. if you split it youve got a wont turn over / wont start prob and an indicator fault.
if this is correct its going to be an ignition barrel / pluggy thingy intermittent connection and an unrelated relay failiure or similar.
just a thought

it could be two different faults, but it all started to happen at once...

Get an electrical schematic for the exact vehicle, it will help you to halve the problem and allot of times careful study of the schematic will point you right where you need to look. The car has 2 issues that we know of, that started at the same time, so you need to look at what those 2 circuits share in common. A ground, power lead, splice, connector, Etc.

The ignition circuit and dashboard turn indicators more than likely share a connector at the gauge pack/steering column.
