Hi all.

Im a bit stumped by a clutch problem thats come up. Just setting off for a 300 mile trip and having gone a few miles the its suddenly hard to either engage or dissengage any gear.

It feels just as if the master or slave cylinder has packed up so return home and open engine bay and check both. They both seem ok with the slave cylinder moving an inch or so when teh pedal is pressed.

In fiddling more I find I can engage and even change gear if the clutch pedal is pressed about halfway down but I press it all the way it feels like its dragging.

Rang the local MGRover dealer where Ive had it serviced and they didnt seem to have any idea but were edging toward replacment clutch at around £600 !!! I cant belive it is the clutch itself as there is no slip and the eventual biting point is in its normal place.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

cheers

Guy

I would have a look at the clutch release shaft where is goes through the bell housing. Its not uncommon for them to corrode making operation of the clutch stiff, or in worse cases seize completely.
Cleaning it up and adding a bit of lubrication usually does the trick.
A couple of MGF/TF parts specialist now sell improved clutch release shaft with a grease connection added so that you can lubricate them.

I did think of the release shaft but I could see that working ok ..well so far as possible with the limited view you get on these cars.

I booked it in to the MGR dealer for 1st thing this morning intending to drive it in gingerly. Got about a mile before all drive went and had to be rescued by the RAC. Words such as release bearing and fork were mentioned. Its in have a new and expensive clutch as type.
