Ok , getting time to take the Capri out of mothballs ,

Capri is a mark 1 originally 3.0 ( Essex)

Now fitted with a 2.8i Turbo ( cologne) with 5 speed box running above 200bhp.
Now the brakes were modified ......er nigger rigged ( sorry not pc) by a third party fitted front 2.8i discs / so need attention
looking at getting cosworth vented discs all round.

However at the same time was thinking about an engine swap .
looking for road use with a bit more poke than the current set up.

like the idea of a V8 swap can anyone offer advise how much the mods would cost ie engine / gearbox / mounting points exhaust etc.
options would be
windsor 302
Rover V8 etc..
Any ideas on the cost for the conversion and reccommended vendors who would do the work

thanks

talk to Niel at Caprisport, he has sorted a decent brake set up that in real terms is cheap, and a rover v8 conversion that works, he used to tackle the conversions himself as well,

http://www.zyworld.com/caprisport/

I had dealings with him several years ago and rate his work highly

Will Holman, editor of Practical Performance Car mag. has a Capri with a V8 in it - might be worth asking.

ls1 from a manaro. get one with the box and elctronics. even the basic engines will see you 350bhp and similar torque for around £3500 (so i have heard).

will give you an increadably reliable engine and box that can take a sh!t load of abuse. also very tunable (probalby more so than the 302)!

odviously going to cost more than a 302 but should also weigh a bit less (ally block and heads).

thanks Chris.

A V6 from a Mondeo will give you ~200bhp as standard. Use an MT75 box and slap your turbo on ...... 300bhp should be easily achieved.

Go for a V8 - fairly common swop is the 302 small block Ford unit - standard trim 200+ bhp with nearly 300lb torque - will pull like a train from low revs - and without the use of forced induction. Crate engine from dealers 350bhp out the box. If you've got deep pockets, they even make an ally block for lightness, aka Rover style. I'm running a 302 in my Sierra and have no complaints at all!

Seconded - but don't bother with the Rover V8 - it's not that much lighter than a small-block Chevy or Ford and it's wider than both. Also to get some decent power out of it will cost more than tuning a Ford or Chevy V8 which start with more power/torque anyway.

US Spec T5 gearbox with B&M short shifter, slightly stronger than the Euro/UK version so I'm told.

Following along the same theme I was looking at LS2 engines

LS2

GM LS2 engine in a 2005 Chevrolet CorvetteThe LS2 was introduced as the Corvette's new base engine for the 2005 model year. It produces 400 hp (298 kW) at 6000 rpm and 400 ft·lbf (542 N·m) at 4400 rpm from a slightly larger displacement of 6.0 L (364.3 in&#179wink. It is similar to the high-performance LS6, but with an improved power peak and more torque throughout the rpm range. The E-series HSV's are equipped with a 412 hp (307 kW) and 406 ft·lbf (550 Nm) version.

Applications:

2005-2007 Chevrolet Corvette
2005-2006 Pontiac GTO
2005-2006 Chevrolet SSR
2006-2007 Chevrolet TrailBlazer SS
2006-2007 Cadillac CTS-V
2004-2007 Holden Special Vehicles (all V8 models)
2005-2006 Vauxhall Monaro VXR

This would tick the right boxes , However any ideas how much it would cost
for a crated engine / Gearbox propshaft / exhaust mods etc.

find a smashed up manarno and probably not that much! the LS1s will be cheaper and have slightly less power (although with a remap, exhaust, filter, etc there wont be that much differance) then the LS2's. also the vauxhal will have the gearbox in the right place (the vette has it mounted at the back).

thanks Chris.

PS speak to boosted on here. or go to http://www.chevroletls1.com/index.html he should beable to sort you out! wink

Yes there are reasons why an earlier LS1 is better, mainly because the ECM's are cheap ($75US) and easily tuned including custom OS's for forced induction, speed density, maf based or basic TPS fueling.
My LS1 NA put down more power on the same dyno as an LS2 supercharged. Thats mild cam too. 220/224. So dont worry too much about the displacement. 5.7L is plenty big enough. Plus LS1 parts are probably cheaper etc. Take a look on ls1tech.com conversions for some ideas, including some guy Pete from Manchester or there abouts with an LS1 in a converted Astra from memory.
I saw a brand new T56 on ebay still under vauxhall warranty for £1500. Plus you should be able to get a stock LS1 for maybe £2k or so.
As mentioned check with boostedls1 and maybe Roger from Monkfish performance, he had one he wanted to sell sitting on his floor a while back. Look into efilive if you are after something to tune the ecm to your requirements or disable VATS security, add valet modes etc.
